MIDDAY UPDATE: Developer of accessible washer and dryer speaks at conference

Michael Hudson is very attached to the washer and dryer in his home. Not only does he use them often, but Hudson — who is blind — helped adapt the appliances to be more accessible to his needs. "I don't benefit from things that are only visual, I need audio," said Hudson, who is also the director of MSU's Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities, or RCPD.

With guard depth gone, Ager and Brown must run a lot

Shannon Brown and Maurice Ager are murderous on the wings. MSU's tandem of athletic guards has shown an ability to finish dunks and alley-oops on the fast break that is nearly unparalleled in the realm of college basketball. But with the departure of Kelvin Torbert, Chris Hill, Alan Anderson and Tim Bograkos, there is a question as to whether or not the duo will be able to get up and down the court at the same break-neck pace as in previous seasons. Depth is now a major concern in the MSU backcourt, with the only feasible substitutes for Ager, Brown and sophomore point guard Drew Neitzel being two unproven freshmen: Maurice Joseph and Travis Walton.

University will assist displaced students

Laura Hillman enjoys practicing her French horn in the quietness of her University Village apartment. Now with the planned redevelopment, the music performance graduate student and her husband have to find a new place to live and practice their music. Hillman said although it is frustrating to move, she's OK with the redevelopment. "(The buildings are) old, small and uncomfortable," she said.

Giving up the funk

A roomful of heads bumped to the rhythm of a Marques Houston song as Caleb Miner pretended to belt out the song's last words, throwing his all into correlating dance steps. The human biology sophomore, dressed like Houston in a baggy yellow T-shirt and jeans, danced in the middle of 14 other people in a classroom for a final practice before Saturday's performance in "Fake the Funk." Miner, along with 75 other performers, will compete in the 15th annual "Fake the Funk" show this weekend — the last one, according to the show's organizers. "In terms of perhaps the fervor, the excitement, it's still… I don't know if the excitement is at its peak," said event coordinator Josh Gillespie, who's been involved with the show for 13 years.

Ride to Detroit prompts reflection

Nearly 50 years after a quiet, black seamstress refused to give up her seat to a white man on a public bus in Montgomery, Ala., Mary Hubbard quietly sat on a different bus, in a different place, at a far different time, scrawling slogans on sheets of poster board. Hubbard's seat was near the back — in fact, one of the last rows — but she sat there by choice, not by restriction. She was traveling to Detroit from East Lansing to pay her last respects to the seamstress.

Judge orders new jury trial for MSU student appealing April 2-3 disturbance related charges

The jury trial for the only student fighting his April 2-3 disturbance-related charges was finished before it began on Tuesday. MSU advertising senior Scott Riddle was charged with obstructing a police officer and a roadway following the disturbances. After the prosecution asked for an adjournment to gather more witnesses, East Lansing 54-B District Judge Richard Ball commented on articles about Riddle published in The State News and decided to release the jurors and select a new jury pool on Nov.

Madden 2006

When Electronic Arts Inc., makers of the "Madden NFL" football series, signed a five-year deal with the NFL in 2004 granting it exclusive rights to the NFL's teams, players and stadiums, there was worry that without competition the Madden games would become lazy and unimaginative. But in the latest installment of the video game chain, "Madden 2006," EA Sports introduces just enough innovation to accompany the same game play and style that has made Madden the most successful football video game franchise ever. The main on-the-field change in "Madden 2006" is in the passing game.

Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects

Electronic Arts hit a gold mine once again, but this time it was with something other than a sports game. "Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects" for the Xbox system is one of the better games I have played in a long time. For comic book lovers this is a must-have game.

Students upset at lack of say in project

The University Apartments Council of Residents, or UACOR, was the only student organization approached for input in plans to redevelop University Village apartments, and other student officials said they should have been included. Chuck Gagliano, assistant vice president for Housing and Food Services, told the MSU Board of Trustees at its Oct.

SN not quality, should stop wasting paper

I've noticed a trend lately in The State News. Either the articles are obtained from the Associated Press or they read like they were written by a high school journalism student. I just finished reading "Debauchery defined Vegas trip" (SN 10/28) and I want my time back. Las Vegas is neither the "city of neon dreams" because this term does not exist nor "the city of lights" because that would be Paris.

Price of politics

Money in political campaigns is hard to come by, but candidates for the East Lansing City Council election seem to be doing well. Local elections, like the one on Nov.
