Hangers show cruelty of life without choice

On Monday, wire hangers were strung around campus with attached pro-choice slogans like, "What women choose when they have no choice." This effective form of protesting comes during Young Women's Week of Action for U.S.

Taking over universe, 1 weapon at a time

As if American foreign policy weren't insulting and degrading enough for the rest of the world, now the White House has to spread its might into the final frontier. The Bush administration has chosen to claim space for America, insisting no one "hostile to U.S.

Open wound

In sports, a short memory is one of the most important assets to have. It's not often athletes like to dwell on past mistakes or think about what went wrong. That holds especially true for the Spartans this year.

Knowles, Meadows often 'in consensus'

Democrat Mark Meadows and Republican John Knowles debated funding for higher education, affirmative action and ways to improve the relationship between students and permanent residents in East Lansing on Wednesday night. The candidates are campaigning to fill the 69th District seat in the state House of Representatives, which includes East Lansing, Meridian Township and Williamstown Township. To give more college students a financial break, Knowles said the Legislature needs to review how it funds higher education. "It should be one of the top priorities of the Legislature," he said.

Help fund Potter Park: Vote 'yes' on millage

Vote yes for the Potter Park Zoo millage. As an employee of the Potter Park Zoo, I cannot stress enough how much the millage would mean to the zoo. The zoo provides medical and daily care to more than 400 animals, many that are endangered.

We've all heard the horror stories of voting irregularities in past elections — hours waiting in lines, dead people casting votes and thousands of votes ignored.

Trustees to vote on 2 renovation projects

Two renovation projects await the green light from the MSU Board of Trustees. The board could approve plans to renovate Spartan Village Elementary and the fourth floor of the Hannah Administration Building at its Friday meeting. MSU officials recommended that Spartan Village Elementary, which has been vacant for three years, be renovated to be used as a community center for the Spartan Village student apartment complex and provide more office space for University Housing because of its limited space across campus. The board will be presented with a proposal to authorize plans to start the renovations and approve the $3.5 million budget for the Spartan Village renovations. University Housing has been spread out all over campus, and Angela Brown, the director of University Housing, said this vacancy is something they needed to take advantage of. "We had several apartments around the complex being used for certain services," Brown said.

Spartans learning from Tigers' success

The last time the Detroit Tigers won a World Series title, most MSU athletes were in diapers or had not even been born. "None of the players on our team have experienced the Tigers win," MSU baseball head coach David Grewe said.

Board candidates talk cost of education

Issues ranged from student safety to coaching tenure as MSU students and East Lansing residents questioned candidates participating in the MSU Board of Trustees forum Wednesday night. The forum was held by the League of Women Voters of the Lansing Area and was sponsored by ASMSU — MSU's undergraduate student government — the Women's Resource Center and the University Activities Board. The League of Women Voters invited all nine candidates running for two open seats on the board in the Nov.

Bush's 'interrogation' act takes away rights of every U.S. citizen

Guantanamo Bay just got a whole lot more controversial. Signed into existence Tuesday, a new bill called the Military Commissions Act of 2006 would allow the government to hold suspected terrorists without the rights of habeas corpus. Habeas corpus is the right to petition the government for unlawful imprisonment — leaving detainees in places, such as Gitmo, in a legal black hole.

MSU blanks Valparaiso, 2-0

With a Big Ten showdown against Northwestern looming on the horizon, the MSU men's soccer team could easily have looked past its Wednesday opponent, Valparaiso. Instead, the Spartans came out and played suffocating defense from the first whistle to the last, crushing the Crusaders, 2-0, at Old College Field. "Today was what we call a Spartan effort," MSU head coach Joe Baum said.

Students discuss opposing abortion views

Correction: The story should have said Roe vs. Wade made abortion legal, not illegal. Construction paper signs with the handwritten message "What women choose when there is no choice" dangled off wire hangers from trees and fences across campus Monday. This week is Young Women's Week of Action for U.S.

Lansing — U.S. Sen. John Kerry endorsed Gov. At the Lansing event, Kerry emphasized sacrifices law enforcement officers make daily during the dedication of the Michigan Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Monument.
