Anti-war groups don't warrant spying

Be careful what you say or do — the Pentagon just might be watching you, especially if you're a member of an anti-war group. There have been numerous cases of our government unwarrantedly spying on U.S.

'Turkey' town to celebrate Thanksgiving

The name might be quirky, but in November, it's a perfect fit. Welcome to Turkey, Texas, one of three towns in United States named after the Thanksgiving table's star. "It's a pretty festive name," said 38-year-old Bud Ham on Tuesday afternoon. Ham works as a mechanic in Turkey. But there won't be any blown-out parades down the streets of Turkey on Thanksgiving.

Draft proposal pointed remark on Iraq

New York Democratic Rep. Charles Rangel proposed a somewhat radical method of ensuring that the United States does not sink itself into a poorly conceived quagmire: He wants to reinstate the draft. The logic behind his suggestion is understandable.

MSU researchers turn secret police code into chemistry lab

Two MSU researchers took pages from a history book, unlocked East Germany's secret police code inscribed on them and turned the entire operation into an interactive chemistry lab — all the while making history. The pair, Lyman Briggs School science historian Kristie Macrakis and assistant professor of chemistry Ryan Sweeder, spent the last two years analyzing archives uncovered from the Stasi, the former East German secret police during the Cold War. The Stasi used a technique of printing hidden text on carbon paper infused with the chemical cerium oxalate, which was only visible after being activated by a separate chemical agent, Macrakis said. Macrakis received the declassified Stasi documents while she was studying in Germany before and after the Berlin Wall fell in 1989. "It's not just your magic pen; it's a lot more sophisticated," she said.

Byrom might not be racist but is certainly ignorant

I am writing this letter in response to Jessica Byrom's commentary in The State News on Tuesday "Affirmative action discriminates, not Proposal 2; move on already" (SN 11/21). While I will not call Byrom a racist, I do think her comments are a bit ignorant. Even though Proposal 2 did pass, you cannot tell me, an African American female, to just "get over it." I will learn to deal with it, but I will not get over it; that would be asking me to accept the fact that this state will lose what little diversity it has and that I will just have to accept the repercussions that will happen as a result of this. Because this proposal has passed, many people in this state will not have an opportunity to go to college, receive scholarships or even apply for a job just because it is now illegal to level the playing field for everyone.

Students win 1st place in national business competition

Three MSU students took top honors at the first ever Fisher Biz Quiz National Challenge. Sponsored by Nationwide Mutual Insurance Co. and The Wall Street Journal, the competition focused on how well these students knew business-related current events. The group took first place and brought home a $3,000 check in the process. Helen Dashney, director of Eli Broad College of Business' financial market institute and the group's adviser, said she saw the students come out of their shells. "Once they started working together, they took on a real competitive spirit and were really able to play off each other's strengths," she said.
