Coverage of centennial accentuates negatives

As East Lansing's Centennial coordinator and an MSU senior, I am writing in response to "Centennial artwork causes community concern" (SN 1/29), and "Photo marks city's anniversary" (SN 1/18). These articles have put a bad spin on what ultimately are positive projects and events put on by the city. In the photo story, it was suggested that a low student turnout at our centennial kickoff was due to the date and time of the event.

Saving Mother Earth one day at a time

It's only ironic that MSU's ecological group, ECO, is holding its Week of Action to raise awareness of global warming during the coldest week of the year. ECO members braved the biting wind at the rock on Farm Lane Wednesday to inform MSU students about the effects of global warming. Students painted the rock with the phrase, "start global cooling" as a part of Rising to the Challenge: A Week of Action.

Versatile Howells is key in Spartans' success

Sometimes, just going with the flow can be a good thing. The no-questions-asked mentality of versatile senior Tyler Howells has made MSU head coach Rick Comley's job much easier. This was just one of the surprising tidbits The State News found when interviewing registered dietitians Diane Fischer from Sparrow Health System and Peggy Apostolos from Ingham Regional Medical Center.

Civilians learn skills

Tucked into the corner of Lansing Community College's West Campus, a mix of MSU students and area residents felt the heat. They grappled with the question of when to use force, handled various ammunition and were even sent to shoot at dangerous assailants. The police weapon tutorial was part of the East Lansing Police Department's annual Citizen's Police Academy, where average Joes are invited to take part in a free, 11-week training session. The Academy gives participants an insider's view of how the ELPD operates, said Capt.

Lansing — Same-sex couples are not given the same opportunities as heterosexual couples when renting or owning property, a report released Tuesday by the Fair Housing Center of Southeastern Michigan concluded. The study examined 120 cases throughout various parts of the state, beginning in May 2005 and ending in February 2006. "Sexual orientation is not always covered in Michigan legislation," said Kristen Cuhran, coordinator of investigations for the housing center.

MSU group plans to raise LBGT awareness

The MSU Stonewall Democrats hope a reorganization of the group will create awareness for the lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender community on campus. Last semester, the group worked with the MSU College Democrats to get people to vote during the November elections. Now, the group has shifted its efforts back to activism, said Kate Lester, president of the Stonewall Democrats. In today's reorganizational meeting, Lester said she plans to set times and dates for group meetings, try to put together goals and establish an executive board.
