Sports fanatics

If you told Jeff Ghiringhelli he was a sports "fan," he would stare directly at you until that phrase was properly reworded. To him, there is the sports "fan," and then there is the sports "fanatic." Don't get them confused. "A sports 'fan' cares about their favorite team, follows their progress and goes to some of the games," the journalism sophomore said.

MSU receives fan support from families, league commissioner

St. Louis — Ralph and Joanne Gentile weren't able to travel to the Czech Republic when their son Brandon, now a sophomore defenseman on the MSU hockey team, was playing in the biggest event of his pre-college career. As a member of the United States National Team Development Program out of Ann Arbor, Gentile and Team USA won a gold medal at the 2005 International Ice Hockey Federation's World Under-18 Championships in the Czech Republic. Mom and Dad were unable to attend. "I had been overseas, and they unfortunately couldn't make it," Brandon Gentile said. But that just made his parents' trip to St.

Group re-enacts Easter Bible story

Thirteen MSU students carried a 12-foot cross weighing more than 50 pounds across campus on Friday. They carried it one at a time on their shoulders, re-enacting Jesus Christ's journey to crucifixion. "When I was carrying it, I can't imagine him carrying his own cross and putting the weight of the world on his shoulders just for us," said Stella Bunn, a kinesiology junior and member of His House Christian Fellowship.

Spartans earned NCAA championship

We did it. The Spartan hockey team, overcoming everything from rampant illness, losing captain Drew Miller to the NHL and a myriad of other setbacks, bested Boston College in the 2007 NCAA national championship game. Much like they had been during the season, in the beginning of the game, the Spartans were the underdogs.

Accepting differences

By Ken Chester For The State News While snow swirled outside East Lansing High School on Saturday evening, a warm atmosphere of diversity, tolerance and brotherhood filled the cafeteria inside. "There are five words: Accept people as they are," said Tammam Alwan, president of MSU's Muslim Students' Association, introducing the evening's speaker. It was MSA's second annual Diversity Dinner, where mostly members of MSU's Muslim community shared traditional food, prayed and discussed race, diversity and religion. During the dinner's keynote speech, MSU visiting religion Professor Mohammad Khalil touched heavily on the subject of Muslim/non-Muslim community. "My hope is that we can open up lines of communications between various Muslims, and between Muslims and non-Muslims," he said. In harmony with Khalil's message, premedical freshman Garrett Nelson, who is Christian, attended the event because most of his friends are Muslim and he wanted to learn more about Islam. "All their moral values are like mine," he said.

Comley answers critics, leads MSU to NCAA title

St. Louis — MSU head coach Rick Comley has been picked apart by the media, fans and the public ever since he was named Ron Mason's successor in 2002. He has dealt with two seasons in which the team failed to meet lofty preseason expectations, ultimately falling short of an NCAA Tournament bid. But with Saturday's 3-1 victory over Boston College to give MSU its third national championship in program history, Comley has met those lofty expectations, silencing the critics in the process. "I want to publicly thank Ron Mason," Comley said of MSU's athletic director.

Persuasion patterns

Ordinarily, I try to stay above the fray when it comes to religion. For starters, the topic is an absolute minefield.

Goaltender key component to Spartans' national championship run

St. Louis — Jeff Lerg gave the Spartans a chance to win the game. Early in the third period, he denied forward Brian Boyle on a two-on-one rush with a glove save that could have given Boston College a 2-0 lead. That save was ranked the fourth best play of the night on SportsCenter and was arguably the turning point in the game. "Coach Newton said on the bench after he made that save, he's like, 'We're going to score two goals and win it.

21 years in the making

St. Louis — Justin Abdelkader wasn't even born when Mike Donnelly scored the game-winning goal in the 1986 NCAA championship game to earn the crown for the Spartans, but the sophomore forward will take his place in the hockey history books alongside him. Abdelkader, like Donnelly, scored the game-winning goal to give MSU the national title.

WEB EXTRA: Brookes stays hot on mound to help MSU beat Purdue, cold temperatures

How cold was it on Sunday at Kobs Field? So cold that junior second baseman Steve Gerstenberger wore four layers of Under Armour under his jersey to fight the game-time wind chill of 23 degrees. "I can hardly move," he said, "but at least I'm warm." So cold that despite the grounds crew's attempts to clear the field before the game with leaf blowers, snow was still piled along the fences — something home-plate umpire Bruce Doane said he has never seen in 35 years. So cold that Purdue rented a microwave from the hotel it was staying at and used it to heat chicken soup in its dugout. But not cold enough to cool down senior pitcher Craig Brookes, who threw seven innings and allowed two runs — one earned — to lead the MSU baseball team to a 3-2 win against the Boilermakers. "Good old Brookesy," MSU head coach David Grewe said of his ace, who kept his conference-leading ERA at 1.29 on an afternoon that felt more like Christmas Eve than Easter Sunday. What was supposed to be the finale of a four-game weekend set ended up being the series opener because of the weather.

Searching for the perfect pair of jeans

Finding the perfect pair of jeans is like looking for a needle in a haystack — especially when that coveted needle is extra curvy, short, tall or shapeless. "It is really hard, especially because I have to love them," said Sarah Jane Lesinski, an interdisciplinary studies in social science and health studies freshman.

MSU, N-Viro fund eco-fuel

The T.B. Simon Power Plant on campus recently conducted an experiment using biosolid waste to generate electricity as an alternative to burning coal. The experiment was conducted by MSU and N-Viro International Corp., a company that works with recycling and alternative fuels. The power plant burned a mixture of biomass and coal in a standard boiler, generating enough electricity to power campus for two days. Burning the biomass and coal mixture yielded a similar energy output as burning coal.
