Police Brief 04/22/08

Police arrested a streaker at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the Sparty’s Spring Party concert, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The suspect, a 19-year-old male student from Clinton Township, was chased by an officer who observed the naked man run past him on the field outside Demonstration Hall.

Market slump could impact E.L. urban housing

Urban housing isn’t selling quickly in East Lansing. Since construction began on West Village in January 2007, a development that includes condos and townhomes, only 21 of the development’s 46 units have sold, said Jamerson Ries, of Abood Properties.

Mandela to get honorary degree

Nobel Peace Prize-winner Nelson Mandela will be recognized with an honorary degree during commencement ceremonies May 2 at Breslin Center. Mandela, former president of South Africa, will present a videotaped response during the ceremony, according to a university press release.

Democratic state lawmakers are planning to introduce legislation that would help reduce unintended pregnancies and protect women’s health by increasing sex education programs and prescription coverage of birth control.

As energy-saving compact fluorescent lamps continue to gain popularity across the country, environmental groups said possible hazardous turnoffs shouldn’t be a concern. At eight different locations on campus Tuesday, members of the environmental stewardship team will host a CFL giveaway during lunchtime hours.

Camping in Michigan

Tahquamenon Falls State Park On the northern coast of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is one of the state’s most beautiful landmarks. The Tahquamenon River and its falls are at the center of the state park which is nearly 50,000 acres. While staying in the park, you can go canoeing, hiking, fishing and hunting. Rental boats also are available. Campgrounds range from rustic sites to sites with electrical service and functioning restrooms. The cost ranges from $2 per person for a rustic site to $23 for a modern site.

Fisheries and wildlife associate professor John Schwartz said he loves getting close to nature. He owns a cabin on an island in the Florida Keys and calls himself an avid hunter. He has traveled to every state in the U.S. and 36 other countries, including student trips he led into Nepal and northern India. When he’s not traveling the globe, he teaches a class about outdoor preparedness. “I teach the class because I enjoy this kind of thing,” he said.
