Same-sex couples' rights need national discussion

Voters in California passed Proposition 8, which amended the state’s constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman, essentially eliminating same-sex marriage in the state. Proposition 8 is the latest in a long line of actions taken to reach a permanent conclusion in the state’s struggle to define marriage. A majority of California voters had shown their disapproval toward same marriage once before, but this time their decision at the polls changed existing legislation.

Not voting might ensure 'greater evil' takes office

In a letter titled Voting not worth hassle if candidates not up to par (SN 11/6), Arthur Manoli gives excuses why his decision to not vote was a more educated and reasonable answer than voting. One of his excuses was that he would only be voting for the “lesser of the two evils,” so why vote at all.

Rested Spartans await Big Ten Tournament

The MSU men’s soccer team had two main objectives coming into this season. First, they wanted to win the Big Ten regular season title — something that had never been done in the program’s history. The squad checked that one off the list Nov. 2 when they defeated Northwestern 1-0.

Hertel's flip throw harder than it appears

Senior defender David Hertel brings a valuable weapon to the men’s soccer team’s offensive arsenal: He can throw the ball a mile. Hertel’s ability to clear a great distance with his throw-ins comes from his mastery of the flip throw. He takes five or six big strides and does the flip by putting the ball on the ground and whipping his body around to create momentum that sends the ball flying out of his hands like a missile.

Obama's presidency will usher in change, unity for America

It’s not hard to think highly of Sen. John McCain, especially when he is as gracious and high-minded in defeat as he was Nov. 4. I know that President-elect Obama wants to usher in an era of unity and healing, but it’s important that we never forget that Obama is the president-elect despite the fact that the McCain campaign promoted fear, xenophobia and racism because he believed people’s ignorance was the margin of victory.

Perles plans to make bid for Mich. governor

MSU Trustee George Perles said running a state is a lot like running a football team: It’s all about winning. “The same thing goes — win, win, win, win,” Perles said. Perles, a former MSU head football coach, is considering adding the role of governor to his résumé. In 2010, Perles said he’s serious about throwing his hat into the ring for Michigan’s gubernatorial race as the Democratic candidate.

Close to achieving glory

For the first time this season, members of the MSU football team really complained about respect Saturday. Junior defensive end Trevor Anderson pleaded that MSU was “not the same old Spartans team.” Senior quarterback Brian Hoyer asked when the name would die.

Creating a legacy

When MSU beat Purdue 21-7 Saturday at Spartan Stadium, the home team made its way over to the southeastern corner of the stadium to do the traditional singing of “MSU Shadows” with the student section. After the final word had been sung, nearly all the Spartans headed to the locker room to celebrate their ninth win of the season.
