The elections are over and there are many new faces taking up important roles in the government. It will be their duty to try and undo the mistakes made by previous administrations.

Theories abound about D.C. move for Granholm

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm has been a big supporter in the Democratic presidential campaign and transition of President-elect Obama. The former Hillary Clinton supporter stumped for Obama after he won the Democratic Party’s nomination. She stood in for Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin to help Vice President-elect Joe Biden prepare for his debate. And most recently, Granholm has counseled Obama as a member of his economic advisory board.

A 62-year-old MSU parking official was struck by a vehicle Sunday in parking Ramp 3 at Wharton Center, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

Police inspect classroom gun threat, find phone

A political science class in Conrad Hall had a scare Wednesday when MSU police pulled a student out of class for reportedly having a gun. Police responded to a tip at about 3:15 p.m. that a student was carrying a gun under his jacket, but the reported gun turned out to be a cell phone in its holster, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

ASMSU proposes 2 bills to help textbook costs

Issues brought up in Tuesday’s ASMSU Academic Assembly meeting centered upon textbook costs and students struggling to pay for them. Christopher Kulesza, chairperson of the assembly, spoke in his State of the Assembly speech about the need to keep the organization’s commitment to fight for a watchful eye on what books are used in classes to help reduce the amount of books students need to buy.

Students race to finish MSU's first solar car

An efficient vehicle cruising in the Michigan sun is what a team of students envision as they work to finish MSU’s first solar car. The car’s frame was formed five years ago and has since been modified several times. MSU’s growing Solar Car Team has the manpower to complete the car by spring, said Lindsay Karn, the team’s public relations manager and an elementary education sophomore.

Field hockey to host weekend NCAA games

After going 6-2 at home in the regular season, the MSU field hockey team will host at least one more game this season. The room full of players and coaches burst into shrieks of joy as it was announced the Spartans would host the first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, with the first challenge coming from defending national champions North Carolina. Iowa and Louisville also will play in East Lansing.

Blood drive another way to defeat Penn State next week

The 2008 MSU-Penn State Blood Donor Challenge is underway. This year marks the 15th time this annual event has taken place. It offers MSU students, faculty and staff the opportunity to donate blood and help save lives while also competing against the Nittany Lions. After two straight years of Penn State victories, it’s time for MSU to regain the title.

Izzo readies team for unknown

You’ll have to excuse MSU head coach Tom Izzo for not knowing much about the Idaho men’s basketball team. After all, the team features 12 new players, a new head coach and has played only one exhibition game.

Racism not erased by Obama's win, real change still needed

“Change we can believe in” and “Yes we can” were some of the slogans used in propelling President-elect Obama, D-Ill., into the White House. Indeed, his win was both convincing and historic. However, what does Obama’s presidency mean for racism? Is racism in fact eradicated? What is the relationship between Sen. Obama being elected and the eradication of structural racism?

Ratings, costumes both irresponsible

What would possess anyone to dress in minimal clothing in public on a bitterly cold night and then complain about how people perceive them on that night? Halloween, of course. Lindsay Lohan’s character in “Mean Girls” said, “Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress like a total slut and no other girls say anything about it.”

Turning over Prop. 8 doesn't support ideals of democracy

This letter is in response to the hypocritical editorial Same-sex couples’ rights need national discussion (SN 11/11). The last couple of months I have been reading The State News almost on a daily basis, and oftentimes I have found articles encouraging voting (The Youth Vote (11/07), Set race, gender issues aside when casting your vote (11/04), Students have no excuse not to get out and vote (11/04), Consider motive behind vote, make an informed decision (11/04), Voting 101 (11/03), etc.).

Unannounced raids harm America's image in war

When the war on terror began shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, it was clear from the start that it would be a completely different war than those the nation had fought before. The fact that a terrorist group has no geographic borders or official representatives has forced the U.S. to completely re-examine how it fights, and develop a whole new set of rules for battle.

Student in Abbot Hall robbed by 2 men Saturday

A 19-year-old student was robbed and threatened Saturday in his Abbot Hall dorm room, according to MSU police. The student fell asleep in his first-floor room after the football game, and woke up at 6 p.m. to find a 6-foot-tall man with a medium build in the room, holding his roommate’s laptop, police said.

A model train engine was stolen Sunday from a vendor’s table during a model train convention at the Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.
