SOCCER

'Extraordinary' defense kept MSU in game

The MSU women’s soccer defense held No. 1 ranked and undefeated Notre Dame off the board until the 72nd minute. But the lone goal for the Fighting Irish was enough for them to earn the 1-0 victory and end the Spartans’ season.

ICE HOCKEY

Icers swept; lose 4 straight for first time since 1991

The No. 17 MSU hockey team has endured two eerily similar weekends in a row. Saturday night’s 3-1 loss to No. 10 Miami (Ohio) was the second straight weekend the Spartans were swept by a clustermate opponent they will face two more times before the end of the season. But the final result wasn’t the only strange similarity of the two losing weekends against two Ohio-based teams.

BASKETBALL

'Uninspired' Spartans rout overmatched Stony Brook

The final score of Sunday’s 73-42 victory over Stony Brook meant very little to women’s basketball head coach Suzy Merchant. The Spartans were tired, passive and careless in MSU’s second game of the season, Merchant said, even though the scoreboard displayed a 31-point MSU win.

MICHIGAN

Cold weather belated, still detours everyday travel

East Lansing residents might need to start digging out their shovels and winter coats this week. While most areas reported an inch of snowfall, Okemos received about 2.2 inches. The snowstorms that hit the West Coast last week are not connected to the storm that hit the Lansing area, said Rob Dale, a meteorologist for WLNS Channel 6.

Professor uses Web site to put spotlight on Mich. policy-making

Citing a lack of legislative information and explanation from Lansing, Matt Grossmann decided to take policy-making reporting into his own hands. The MSU political science assistant professor combined today’s world of blog-driven political commentary and student interest in policy-making to create the Michigan Policy Network, a Web site launched Nov. 11 dedicated to covering policy issues in Lansing.

Students rally against same-sex marriage ban

About 150 protesters braved the cold Saturday night to attend an Alliance of Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, Transgender and Straight Ally Students’ rally for equal rights. The rally, one of six in Michigan, was held at the rock on Farm Lane and protested the outcome of the Nov. 4 election result of California’s Proposition 8, a ban against same-sex marriage.

Global festival brings world cultures to campus

Josh Rabinowitz and his wife adopted their daughter from Kazakhstan almost two years ago. Rabinowitz, an Ann Arbor resident, traveled to East Lansing on Sunday for the MSU Global Festival after learning of it through a support group for families with adopted Kazakh children.

COMMENTARY

Big Three bailout might be necessary

It has not been a pleasant year for General Motors Corp. Soaring fuel prices along with a devastating meltdown in the automotive sector have all but evaporated its cash reserves. The company has been steadily shedding its work force for the past year, but those efforts do not appear to have had the intended effect of staving off bankruptcy.

COMMENTARY

Music scene not stagnant, bands should work harder to be heard

This letter is in response to Friday’s Flavor of the Week article featuring the Lansing band Incarta. The headline read “Lansing rock band fights to be heard in midst of stagnant local music scene” and after reading the article I personally took offense to the local music scene being called stagnant.

COMMENTARY

Column calling for acceptance overlooks Christian population

In response to Thea Neal’s column Keep fighting for same-sex marriage (SN 11/7), I am saddened by the hostility of this article, which criticizes people of faith and those who do not agree with the practice of homosexuality. The Bible does not say “no” to the homosexuals, it says “no” to the practice of homosexuality. Yes, as stated in the column, Jesus is all about love. However, Jesus is also about not practicing homosexuality, not as a matter of hate, but as a plan to experience love as God intended.

COMMENTARY

Police response to gun report well excecuted

It’s one of a college student’s worst fears: A madman comes to class with a gun and opens fire. Although the fear likely has been around for years, the Virginia Tech shootings made it seem all too possible. No longer was the image of a crazed classmate going on a rampage confined to the realm of the imagination.

Police Brief 11/14/08

Three washing machines and one dryer were found damaged Wednesday in Spartan Village laundry room one, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.

Gradual meltdown

As Michigan’s economy falters toward disaster, policy-makers are working to both stabilize the auto industry and reduce the state’s dependence on it.
