Study sheds light on HPV, could aid future research

Findings from a recent government study will help researchers in gauging the effectiveness of preventative treatments for cancers associated with human papillomavirus, or HPV. The report, released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention earlier this month, said about 25,000 cases of HPV-associated cancers occurred annually between 1998 and 2003.

Group looks to set record straight on Africa

When Baba Koumare first came to America, he couldn’t speak English very well, but he understood that the media wasn’t portraying Africa in a positive light. “When I got here, people would ask me, ‘Oh my God, Baba, do you wear shoes in Africa? Do you guys wear clothes? Do you live in trees? Do you have huts?’” the supply chain management junior said.

Returning players give Spartans bright future

Although the 2008 MSU field hockey team might have been only inches away from the NCAA Final Four, the team looks like it could be miles ahead of the competition for 2009. This year’s team, which made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, was just a missed penalty corner short of heading to the third Final Four in school history.

BASKETBALL

Izzo settles on small lineup

After weeks of wondering who would play where and in what capacity, MSU men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo unveiled the first official edition of the MSU starting lineup Sunday night. In the Spartans’ 100-62 season-opening win against Idaho at Breslin Center, Izzo started sophomore guards Kalin Lucas and Chris Allen in the backcourt, senior guard Travis Walton at the three and junior forward Raymar Morgan and senior center Goran Suton in the frontcourt.

FOOTBALL

Defensive tackles Wilson, Kershaw making impact

Linebackers get the tackles and defensive ends rack up the sacks, but the two most important players to the MSU rush defense might be the ones who don’t put up gaudy numbers. Defensive tackle Justin Kershaw, a 6-foot-5, 273-pound senior, and nose tackle Oren Wilson, a 6-foot-3, 288-pound sophomore, rarely show up on the stats sheet, but it’s beyond the numbers where their contributions shine.

Stem cell victory positive for Mich.

On Nov. 4, the citizens of Michigan sent the state Legislature, the Michigan Catholic Conference and Right to Life Michigan a clear message: “You won’t keep us from cures.” Despite several popularly supported bills to change the state’s archaic laws on embryonic stem cell research, the state legislature had failed the people of Michigan by not moving these bills to law. So citizens organized, collected thousands of petition signatures and got the issue on the ballot as Proposal 2.

Guns should be left in hands of trained police officers

I am a gun owner and hunter and feel that people have the right to defend themselves. But on the same note, I think guns have no place on this campus unless worn by police officers. The MSU police are trained, professional men and women, many of them former students, who have made the commitment to protect us.

COMMENTARY

Tolerance needed for those who don't support same-sex marriage

There have been a slew of articles in The State News discussing the disappointments over the recent bans of gay marriage in Florida, Arizona and California. The writers (the State News editorial board included) go further than expressing disappointment; they accuse those who choose not to support gay marriage of intolerance and bigotry. However, their arguments rest on a creed of universal tolerance.

Prop. 1's implications unclear, concern some

Although the details regarding Proposal 1 and Michigan’s upcoming medical marijuana program still are being discussed, some people have concerns about the program’s implications. The Board of State Canvassers must meet in the next two to three weeks to certify the 2008 election, after which the Michigan Department of Community Health must promulgate a series of rules to implement the constitutional amendment by Dec. 4. The administrative process must be ready to operate by April 4.

Obama's web savvy could strengthen dialogue

President-elect Barack Obama’s ability to communicate with voters was a deciding factor in his campaign victory — and it could change the way Americans interact with their elected officials. Hours after winning the presidency, Obama launched the Web site www.change.gov, extending his online dialogue into the presidential transition.

Blowout over Idaho in season opener

MSU men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo said he didn’t know much about Idaho’s basketball team entering Sunday’s game. Turns out, it didn’t really matter. Junior forward Raymar Morgan and sophomore guard Chris Allen each scored 21 points for the Spartans, who opened the season with a convincing 100-62 win over Idaho at Breslin Center.

Snowfall stalls field hockey match

As if the two teams hadn’t seen each other enough this season, the NCAA quarterfinal match between MSU and Iowa was postponed Sunday because of heavy snowfall and is scheduled to resume at 11 a.m. today. The snow began falling heavily during halftime, limiting visibility and prompting officials to begin using orange balls instead of the standard white.

SOCCER

Breakout season ended by Irish

Blistering cold winds whipped through Notre Dame’s Alumni Field as the MSU women’s soccer team waited for someone to start heating up. But the only source of warmth that smashed through the ice cold tundra was Notre Dame’s Rose Augustin, who scored the contest’s game winning — and only — goal of the afternoon en route to a 1-0 victory Sunday, knocking the Spartans out of the NCAA Tournament in the second round.

DeMartin, Steinlage lead MSU to tournament title

It’s official. The MSU men’s soccer team is the class of the Big Ten. Two weeks after clinching the first regular season Big Ten championship in MSU history, the Spartans defeated Indiana 1-0 in the championship game of the Big Ten Tournament in Madison, Wisc., to win their first Big Ten Tournament championship since 2004.
