DeMartin earns academic honor

For the first time in the history of the men’s soccer program, a Spartan has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American First Team. Senior forward Doug DeMartin earned the award Wednesday after being selected to the Academic All-District IV first team, which made him eligible for All-American recognition.

MSU volleyball team clings to NCAA Tournament aspirations

It’s not over ‘til it’s over. That’s the attitude the MSU volleyball team is taking into the last two weeks of the regular season. The team (14-13 overall, 6-10 Big Ten) still holds an outside chance of making the NCAA Tournament with an at-large bid and is looking to take every opportunity to slip into the Big Dance.

Bush leads Spartans to NCAA Championships

Cross country senior Nicole Bush has broken individual MSU records, won high school state titles and earned conference awards in her illustrious running career. Yet the crowning achievement in an already overflowing trophy case — an NCAA national championship — has alluded the Wyoming, Mich., native. Bush and the 10th-ranked Spartans women’s team will travel to Terre Haute, Ind., on Monday for the NCAA Championships, where Bush will look to best her fifth-place finish in 2007.

Weapons on campus would threaten student safety

I’d like to respond to Brian Wlosinski’s letter to the editor Carrying guns on campus could work if regulated (SN 11/19). This solution has flaws that need to be considered. By allowing weapons on campus, the chance of someone who should not have a weapon getting ahold of one will increase dramatically. While this could be solved with locks and safes, the problem still exists. No one is perfect, and slipups will happen.

Headlight safety needs discussion

When was the last time you flipped a switch to turn the headlights on in your car? Chances are, if you drive a car made in the 21st century, you might not remember the last time. That’s because newer cars have automatic sensors that detect the amount of light outside and turn the headlights on when the sensors deem it appropriate.

In his campaign for president, President-elect Barack Obama broke many barriers in terms of utilizing modern technology for politicians. Thus, it’s fitting that he’s begun breaking barriers for presidents — even before he takes office.

E.L. buildings go green

East Lansing is “Going green” with its developments. “One of the things we’ve thought about is … we’d like to promote LEED certification when projects get funding from the city,” said Tim Schmitt, a community development analyst for East Lansing. LEED certification is a nationally accepted program that rates the level of green buildings. There are varying levels of certification, from basic to platinum, which is the most environmentally friendly.

U-M higher-up recommended to fill MSU vice president slot

With the support of MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon, Robert Groves has been recommended to become the new vice president for university advancement. Groves currently works at the University of Michigan as the associate vice president and campaign director for university development.
