Professor uses Legos to teach

A Lego-based wall-climbing robot kicks its legs up high like a chicken and walks with suctioned feet across a table in the office of Dean Aslam, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering. For the past 10 years, Aslam has been applying Lego-based objects to complicated engineering tactics as part of his university research and as a method of outreach.

Spartans look to limit mistakes against 2 ranked opponents

The men’s basketball team isn’t the only hoops squad that has to endure a tough stretch of games the next week. The No. 24 women’s basketball team, fresh off winning the TD Banknorth Classic championship, now has to face No. 23 Old Dominion and No. 14 Notre Dame this week, something head coach Suzy Merchant said she is looking forward to.

Izzo preparing team for Old Spice Classic

With arguably the toughest four-game stretch in program history on the horizon, MSU men’s basketball head coach Tom Izzo is preparing for a stressful holiday season. “This might be toughest four-game stretch because … none of (the games) are at home,” Izzo said. “It just gives me something else to worry about over Thanksgiving.”

Race-based groups deserve student tax funds

The concept of race is one that has haunted this nation from its very birth. The U.S. has taken tentative step after step forward, trying to reach that mythical future Martin Luther King Jr. once spoke about — a world in which everyone was color-blind, and race no longer mattered.

Same-sex couples ask for equality

When I came to college about three years ago, I was extremely different than I am now. Anyone will tell you college is a time when you’re supposed to find yourself, slowly transforming into the individual you want to be and having the courage to stand up for the things you hold close to your heart.

Assault victims bear no responsibility for attacks

I don’t like the way Abby Lubbers adds insult to injury in the police blurb Police: Woman attacked near Hubbard Hall (SN 11/24) by indirectly placing the blame on the survivor of the attack. Reminding readers to plan where to run in case of an attack or to look around the bushes seems to insinuate that this woman obviously failed to form an escape plan ahead of time or to look for villains who might be lurking in bushes.

FOOTBALL

MSU not yet elite

In a few days, when the sting of Saturday’s 49-18 beatdown in Beaver Stadium wears off, the MSU football team will be able to reflect on its 9-3 season. The No. 22 Spartans (9-3 overall, 6-2 Big Ten) can take pride in likely becoming the first MSU team to reach a New Year’s Day bowl game since 2000, when the Spartans stunned Florida with a 37-34 win in the Citrus Bowl (now known as the Capital One Bowl). MSU will either receive a berth in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando, Fla., or the Outback Bowl in Tampa, Fla.

Dantonio has many faces as head of team

Mark Dantonio can be described many ways. He can be called old-school, perhaps a traditionalist. Or he can be defined by any one of his Dantonioisms, such as “Stay the course” and “They all count one.”

SOCCER

Defense wins championships

If you don’t allow goals, you can’t lose. That’s the motto the MSU men’s soccer team has been living by this season. And it’s working perfectly for the Spartans, as they have racked up seven straight shutouts. With an established scorer in Doug DeMartin up top, head coach Joe Baum has been able to focus his attention on molding the defensive unit into a back line that has been impenetrable of late.

Grad student pushes for approval of on-campus climbing wall

MSU could see a climbing wall in its future — at least if rock lovers can get to the top. ASMSU’s Student Assembly policy committee will advocate for an indoor rock climbing facility, as voted unanimously on Thursday. Geological sciences graduate student Matthew Malkowski has spent the last year gathering a location and appraisals for a wall at MSU.
