Stimulus discussions need to focus on change, spending

The last few days of this stimulus plan debate have gotten ridiculous. I voted for change in November and I guess it was bailout day at the country club, because Republicans did not get the message, as they are claiming to put their foot down and say no to wasteful spending.

Driver tax necessary if Mich. roads are to be improved

The editorial board brings up many good points in Driver tax illogical way to fix Mich. Roads (SN 2/6), such as the argument that raising taxes will only discourage potential businesses from relocating to Michigan. However, the editorial board’s solution to the problem is a widespread public works program.

MSU closing in on Big Ten lead after 52-46 victory

The MSU women’s basketball team’s 52-46 win over No. 14 Ohio State was the battle it was built up to be. A match between the top two teams in the Big Ten, the Spartans led the entire game, but never by more than six on their way to a win that moves them within a half-game of first place in the Big Ten.

ICE HOCKEY

Icers blank Bulldogs 1-0

Big Rapids — For a second consecutive night, senior goaltender Jeff Lerg came through with an effort good enough to lead the MSU hockey team to victory — only this time, the Spartans were able to hold on to an early lead.

MSU overtakes Indiana in 'strange' game

Never has a 28-point win looked so ugly. Playing against Indiana, the worst team in the Big Ten, the No. 13 MSU men’s basketball team shot 42.4 percent from the field, 67.9 percent from the free-throw line and 28.6 percent from 3-point range — typical ingredients for disaster.

Icers can't hold on in 2-2 tie

In years past, a tie with Ferris State would not be looked upon as a successful outcome for the MSU hockey team. But in the midst of a tough season — one that includes winless streaks of 11 and, currently, six games — any point is a good point for the Spartans. Despite losing a 2-0 lead for the second straight game and losing the shootout 2-1, MSU head coach Rick Comley will certainly settle for the point the 2-2 tie brings his team.

Diners at The Gallery at Snyder-Phillips Hall were caught in a Chicken Little moment Thursday, when water poured from the ceiling and dislodged four ceiling tiles. Tables below where the ceiling collapsed were unoccupied and, as far as bystanders could tell, nobody was hurt.

A mission out of Michigan

Warmer weather, cheaper housing and, more importantly, better job prospects have kept Michigan residents streaming out of the state, but some experts think the trend will slow down. An annual survey released last month by the trucking company United Van Lines found that more than 67 percent of Michigan moves in 2008 were out of the state. Last year marks the third straight time that Michigan has had the highest rate of outbound moves for any state in the country.

Kids get taste of Malian art

Students in the East Lansing Public Schools are getting a crash course in art. In an effort to expose children to global artists, the schools have joined with MSU’s Residential College in the Arts and Humanities, or RCAH, to bring in artists to visit with the students. The program has operated for about a year.

BASKETBALL

Tough guy

In the second half of a game between the MSU men’s basketball team and Illinois earlier this year, an MSU jumper clanked off the rim. MSU freshman forward Draymond Green and Illinois forward Dominique Keller each jumped for the rebound, both coming down together with the ball. Quickly and swiftly, Green lifted the ball up — and with it the 6-foot-7, 230 pound Keller. Green body-slammed Keller to the ground.
