In less than two decades, a former MSU economics assistant professor has gone from lecturing classrooms of students to briefing the president. Ed Montgomery, an MSU economics professor from 1986-90, was named director of recovery for auto communities and workers last week by the Obama administration.

Office to honor dead student at ceremony

The MSU Office for International Students and Scholars will honor deceased MSU student Don Ausman at its third annual Globie Awards today. The ceremony is scheduled for noon in The Spartan Club, located on the fourth floor of Spartan Stadium.

CATA to cancel service on Easter

Capital Area Transportation Authority, or CATA, has announced that buses will not run on Sunday in observance of Easter. Additional changes will be made to several routes on Saturday night.

Championship appearance is slam dunk for local businesses

Although the men’s basketball team fell short Monday, local business owners said they were winners in terms of sales thanks to the team’s appearance in the NCAA championship game. At Student Book Store, 421 E. Grand River Ave., MSU shirt sales skyrocketed and led to a measurable increase in business, said Mike Wylie, assistant manager at SBS.

Renowned professor emeritus dies

Yash Pal Kapur, an accomplished professor who received accolades worldwide in the field of medicine, died Tuesday. The professor emeritus, 82, was the chairman of the Department of Surgery in the College of Human Medicine.

Last Lecture Series wraps up with peace-focused message

Students and faculty gathered for a professor’s “last lecture” Wednesday night, but they were not taking notes or attending a class. As part of the ASMSU-sponsored Last Lecture Series, Steve Sharra, a visiting assistant professor in philosophy and peace and justice studies, spoke about his home country of Malawi and the lessons he learned from his time there.

Michigan trounces MSU men's tennis, 7-0

The MSU vs. Michigan rivalry always brings out the best in both teams. But on Wednesday afternoon, the No. 49 Wolverines showed dominance on the tennis court as they defeated the Spartans 7-0 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.

PETA does not actually care about treatment of animals

I was disappointed to see the column Animal activists encourage discussion (SN 4/8) by a People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, spokesperson in The State News. Even their own logo minimizes the “e,” perhaps as an inside joke that there is nothing ethical about them. PETA’s only interest is in making a profit, and they have found that suckering well-meaning people who like animals is a good way to do it.

Black 2001 Saturn SC2. That’s the car I drive — and if you’re a bicyclist on the road but not in a bike path and you see my car, I hope you’re wearing a helmet, because I might run you over. Maybe not intentionally.

Moody earns national honors

After throwing the MSU baseball team’s first no-hitter in more than 16 years Saturday, MSU senior pitcher Nolan Moody was named Pro-Line Athletic Pitcher of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. He was also named to the Collegiate Baseball newspaper’s Louisville Slugger National Players of the Week list and the College Baseball Foundation’s National All-Star Lineup.

Newman paired with PGA veterans

MSU junior golfer Jack Newman opens play in the first round of the Masters is in Augusta, Ga., which begins today. On Tuesday, the pairings were announced for the first two days of the tournament. Newman will be playing with PGA Tour veterans Rocco Mediate and Fred Couples.

No place like home for MSU

After recent snow pushed the MSU softball team’s doubleheader with Purdue to today, the Spartans spent Wednesday’s practice catching up for lost time. Because of scheduling and bad weather, the team wasn’t able to practice on the field for nearly a week, something the team will try to counter as it prepares for one of the fastest teams in the Big Ten, head coach Jacquie Joseph said.

Grades confirm successful 2008-09 season

The MSU men’s basketball team ended its 2008-09 season in the national championship game Monday night, overcoming injuries, illnesses and naysayers throughout the season. With a final record of 31-7, this year’s team etched its name in the program record book with the third-most wins in program history.

Broad Art Museum to finish later than planned

MSU painted a troublesome picture of the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum’s future on Wednesday, saying it didn’t expect to break ground on the project until March 2010, more than a year and a half later than originally planned.
