Spartans have talent for 2010 Final Four run

The MSU men’s basketball team fell one game short of the mountaintop Monday, losing to North Carolina 89-72 in the National Championship at Ford Field. But don’t despair, Spartans fans, because MSU will be back on college basketball’s biggest stage next season. With a talented nucleus of players set to return, MSU should enter the 2009 campaign as a top-five team in the nation and a foolproof favorite (I’m looking at you, Digger Phelps) to return to the Final Four.

NEWS

Cheers, no tears

The arrival of spring and deep NCAA Tournament runs by the MSU men’s basketball team used to be signs of impending disturbances in East Lansing. However, police and university officials are hoping two celebrations within the last week they deemed as “peaceful” might signal progress in their efforts to improve a reputation tattered by riots in years past.

Proposals for academic calendar released

The Academic Year Task Force drafted an initial report on its findings regarding changes to the academic calendar to begin as early as 2010. Based on survey data from faculty and students and calendars of other universities, the task force suggests MSU adopt a 14-week fall semester, to begin after Labor Day. There would be a one-week finals period, according to the report.

Auction clears out Flats Grille

Paul O’Connor bought his grandma’s cutting board from a Michigan Department of Treasury auction Tuesday morning of the remnants of Flats Grille, the business he used to own. The sentimental piece and his computer from the restaurant’s office were the only things the owner of the former eatery was able to keep of items sold in the auction.

MSU seeking good road fortune

The MSU baseball team has been perfect at home this season and nearly the complete opposite away from East Lansing. This week, the Spartans will have a chance to right that ship while also making a dent in the Big Ten standings early in the conference schedule.

COMMENTARY

Basketball team’s return deserved more attention

The MSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics let down our men’s basketball team. What should have been a raucous gathering to celebrate one of the most historic and highest-achieving seasons in Spartan history was instead a pitiful gathering of those lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time Tuesday morning at Breslin Center.

Seniors leave their mark on the program

Detroit — Travis Walton had it all figured out. The MSU senior guard was going to climb the ladder and cut down the Ford Field net with “One Shining Moment” playing in the background on Monday night, celebrating the 2009 NCAA national championship. Instead, it was North Carolina and Tyler Hansbrough who lived Walton’s dream, as the Tar Heels beat the MSU men’s basketball team 89-72.

‘Better team’ won; MSU had great season

As he trudged off the court for the final game of his sophomore season, Kalin Lucas looked ruefully into a colossal sea of green. His head bowed and shoulders slumped, the guard looked like he had done much more than lose a basketball game — he looked like he had just let down the world.
