Road construction to begin with $850M stimulus funds

Michigan is on track to meet federal government requirements for spending nearly $850 million in federal stimulus funds for road construction, the state’s transportation director said Wednesday, but East Lansing likely will get only a sliver of those funds for a single project.

Treat E.L. homeless with more respect

A few months ago, I witnessed a homeless man being escorted out from under my apartment complex staircase by police. Drifting in and out of consciousness and struggling to stand up unassisted, the bearded traveler denied any and all accusations of drunkenness as the two officers apprehended him with blue latex gloves gripped around their hands.

Deporting Mich. prisoners illogical choice

Justice is a dish best served in another country. That’s the message state Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith, D-Salem, is sending with her proposed legislation to deport foreign inmates after they serve at least half of their minimum sentence in Michigan. Smith’s logic, however, does nobody justice.

Spartans, Tar Heels to meet again in Big Ten/ACC Challenge

The MSU men’s basketball team will take the floor with North Carolina for the third time in a calendar year and for the second consecutive year in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The two teams will meet in Chapel Hill, N.C. on Dec. 1 in the 11th rendition of the weeklong event that pits teams from each conference against one another.

E.L. feels squeeze as it plans budget

The economy’s impact on city services was reflected in sections of the city’s budget, which was presented Tuesday to the East Lansing City Council. The city’s human services, parking fund and capital improvement received little or no increase in funding, due in part to difficult economic times, council members said.
