It’s that time of year again — graduation. Spartans are moving up and moving on and campus is losing a lot of winners. Personally, I’m saying goodbye to my best girlfriends and will have to trot around campus without their pretty faces keeping me company.

In softball, the pitcher is the heart and soul of the team. “You don’t win unless you have a horse in the circle,” MSU pitching coach Jessica Bograkos said. “You don’t see any teams go the distance without an ace.”

During his 14 years as head coach of the MSU men’s basketball team, Tom Izzo has participated in his share of pressure-inducing activities. He’s coached in three Final Fours, thrown out the first pitch of a Detroit Tigers game and even rapelled from the ceiling of Breslin Center.

Expensive textbooks should at least be high quality, correct

I purchased “Understanding Statistics in the Behavioral Sciences” by Robert R. Pagano for a psychology statistics class this semester. I was surprised when the price tag read nearly $165 because it was a small book with no interesting pictures and boring black and blue print. When I got the book home and inspected it closer, I noticed a whole chapter near the back of the book was bound upside down!

Stereotypes about military do not apply to all members

I’m writing in response to a letter written by Bradley Gershel, Obama must bring real change by ending brutal policies of past (SN 4/29). I have never served in the military but many of my closest friends currently are serving in both the Marine Corps and U.S. Army.

America’s first black president was inaugurated. The university lost five of its students The MSU men’s basketball team vied for the NCAA Championship in Detroit. You don’t need me to tell you it was a memorable semester at MSU. But it was especially memorable for us at The State News.

Keep options open when graduating from MSU

The 2008-09 school year is over, but for graduates, now is the time to reflect on what happened and cherish the memories. Most people spend four years in college, and for most people those four years are the best of their lives.

Spartans split doubleheader with Nittany Lions

The MSU softball team split a doubleheader against Penn State on Wednesday, taking the nightcap 3-2 but losing the first game 6-3. The Spartans took the lead early in the second game with a deep three-run home run to left field by sophomore outfielder Jessica Bracamonte in the bottom of the first inning.

Police Brief 04/30/09

A 21-year-old female student reported a bicycle stolen from a bike area at University Village Apartments, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. The bicycle, valued at $400, was stolen sometime between April 17 and 27, McGlothian-Taylor said.

Rather to give commencement speech

TV journalist Dan Rather will be the feature speaker at MSU’s advanced degree commencement May 8, the university announced Wednesday. Rather also will be given an honorary doctorate of humanities degree.

Abstract plays challenge audience

Renditions of Caryl Churchill’s abstract plays, “This is a Chair” and “Far Away,” will wrap up the Department of Theatre’s 2008-09 season this weekend at Snyder-Phillips Hall. The plays, co-presented by the Residential College in the Arts and Humanities, or RCAH, opened Tuesday and will continue through Sunday.

Although the proposed carbon cap-and-trade policy has yet to pass in the United States, a new Web site makes it possible for U.S. residents to reap the benefits of other nations’ cap-and-trade systems, while promoting a greener lifestyle.

Team tries new strategies to prepare for close races

The No. 3 MSU women’s rowing team has grown accustomed to crossing the finish line and seeing its opponents far behind. The Spartans have dominated their opponents by so much this season they are having to re-practice what it feels like to have a close race as the team prepares for this weekend’s Big Ten Championship Regatta at Ohio State.

Spartans split doubleheader

Slugglish starts stymied the MSU baseball team in both games of its Wednesday doubleheader against Eastern Michigan, but only once did they prove costly. The Spartans erased a three-run deficit to win 6-5 in the first game, but they ran out of magic in the second game, losing 6-1 to give MSU manager Jake Boss Jr. a de-facto no-decision in his first game managing against the team he coached last season.

Study abroad in Mexico canceled due to swine flu

Four students studying abroad in Mexico are returning home due to the swine flu that health officials Wednesday confirmed reached the east side of Michigan. University spokesman Jason Cody said Wednesday the university canceled its programs in Mexico due to the swine flu scare.

Responsible environment key to safely enjoying alcohol

In response to Anupama Sridaran’s letter Students need to understand consequences of drinking (SN 4/23), Anupama is correct in stating there is a large percentage of underage drinking on college campuses throughout the United States. Anupama is also correct in stating that in some cases, the use and abuse of alcohol can be a detriment to the studies and career paths of some students.
