Harry Potter-inspired Quidditch game gains popularity on campus

Members of MSU’s new Quidditch league don’t use jet packs and they won’t fly through fields, but they are contributing to a skyrocketing interest in Quidditch — a game inspired by the fictional world of J.K Rowling’s “Harry Potter” book series — that has emerged on a local, national and international level.

Student's funeral to be held Friday

A funeral for MSU student Jeremy Sobczak-Obetts will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Jude Catholic Church, 1120 4 Mile Road, in Grand Rapids. Sobczak-Obetts, a food service management senior, died early Saturday morning in a Grand Rapids car accident.

Native American rights art stolen

A week before an on-campus exhibit aimed at forcing viewers to consider Native American rights was expected to conclude, several pieces of art were stolen, leaving the artist disappointed by what he called a lack of respect.

MSU joins RosBREED project to create better tasting fruits

For Amy Iezzoni, quality fruit doesn’t start at the grocery store; it starts in a laboratory. Iezzoni, a horticulture professor, will be part of the four-year, $14.4 million grant research project called RosBREED. The project will allow researchers to match favorable traits in strawberries, cherries, peaches and apples to improve the fruits’ quality and create new breeds.

One would be forgiven for giving up on the idea the U.S. ever will pass health care legislation. It’s the fight that just won’t end. However, there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel. The question is whether that light is a solution or yet another train coming to run the whole process down.

Lighter Nix could be force inside for MSU

What would have happened if Derrick Nix hadn’t taken this summer seriously? Nix, a freshman center on the MSU men’s basketball team, knows exactly what would have happened if he hadn’t dropped 30 pounds — and counting — since his arrival in East Lansing. Or if he hadn’t done extra cardio on his own after working out with teammates. Or if he had consumed more than just cereal, Nutrigrain bars and liquids after 6 p.m. in an effort to get into shape.

Arts, libraries suffer financial hits

Kresge Art Museum usually hosts multiple special exhibitions each year, featuring the work of artists such as Andy Warhol and Luke Swank. But next year, the museum only will host one outside exhibition and will rely more on MSU-owned collections.
