Doctor speaks about recent experience working in Haiti

Sidney Coupet wanted to help Haiti long before this month’s earthquake. Coupet, president and founder of Doctors United for Haiti, traveled to Haiti two days after the earthquake hit and spent 10 days helping patients, performing what he described as “battlefield medicine.” Coupet visited MSU on Friday to talk about his most recent experience in Haiti during two separate speeches — one to MSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine and one open to the general public.

Poll shows Ilitch, Cox front-runners in gubernatorial race

A recent poll revealed Detroit businesswoman Denise Ilitch as the Democratic front-runner for November’s gubernatorial election and Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox as the leading Republican candidate. The poll, which was conducted by EPIC-MRA, a public policy polling group in Lansing, showed 23 percent of the respondents like Ilitch in the Democratic primary, with 38 percent undecided or refusing to choose.

Festival rocks Metrospace

Sam Corbin and Jen Sygit chatted with the crowd while preparing for their performances Saturday night at (SCENE) Metrospace.Corbin and Sygit were the first to take the stage Saturday night as part of the third annual (SCENE) Metrospace Folk Festival, a two-day concert series spotlighting local folk artists. The event, held Friday and Saturday night, featured artists sponsored by Michigan-based companies Fox on a Hill Productions and Earthwork Music.

Icers split weekend series with Michigan

Fans were on the edge of their seats. Players on both benches were on their feet. And no one knew what the end result would be until the final whistle. It was a typical weekend of hockey in the rivalry series between No. 12 MSU and No. 20 Michigan.

The No. 22 MSU gymnastics team broke a two-meet skid and soared past No. 25 Ohio State, 194.875 to 191.425, Saturday at Jenison Field House as several gymnasts finished with season-best performances.

America must focus on clean energy solutions

America’s dependence on foreign oil hurts our economy, subsidizes hostile regimes overseas and puts our national security at risk. Rather than continuing to send billions overseas for Middle Eastern oil, new clean energy policies mean spending that money here at home on clean energy sources that will create new jobs, build new industries and make us more secure.

Former captain Walton back with Spartans as student assistant

Kalin Lucas’ signature drive to the basket just got a little tougher. At least in practice. Former MSU guard Travis Walson, last season’s Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, has returned to East Lansing to complete three classes and receive his bachelor’s degree in family community services — also while joining the men’s basketball scout team.

A 21-year-old male MSU student reported a computer stolen from his backpack after it was taken from his car in Ramp 6, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said.
