The Kellogg Bird Sanctuary, 12685 E. C Ave. in Augusta, Mich., is offering its third annual Field of Ornithology Course, or FOC, this spring. The course will run from Wednesday through May 22 and include lectures and field trips every other week.
Inspired by the nighttime creatures she heard scurrying and squeaking in her backyard, MSU alumna and Morrice, Mich., resident Brenda Roy wrote and illustrated a children’s book, which was published at the end of January. Called “Night Noise,” the book combines poetry with biology to create a story about nocturnal animals. The State News talked with Roy about her new book and its reception, as well as her plans for the future.

Not only do circus animals suffer physical abuse, but also emotional abuse. Even if bred in captivity, tigers, bears, elephants and other circus animals are not domestic animals. While in captivity, they have the same urges to perform natural behaviors as their counterparts in the wild. Unfortunately, almost every natural behavior is denied to them.

The multimillion dollar Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum came one step closer to reality Tuesday at a ground breaking ceremony that attracted more than 400 people. The museum’s namesake couple, as well as its architect, London-based Zaha Hadid, were among the 14 people who dug shovels into the ground near the museum’s future site, next to Berkey Hall.

MSU freshman Sasha Savage will not face charges for her alleged involvement in a November 2009 prank, but remains suspended from MSU, according to her lawyer. She faced felony charges carrying sentences of up to 20 years in prison for her alleged involvement in a firework prank on Nov. 1, 2009.
A man allegedly connected to a sexual assault at MSU in February has been apprehended in Illinois, MSU police said. Montague Stanford, 40, of Naperville, Ill., is awaiting formal charges from the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office for an alleged sexual assault of a female MSU student on MSU’s campus.
Two MSU students got into an altercation in Case Hall on March 5 that led to an assault, MSU police Sgt. Florene McGlothian-Taylor said. A 19-year-old female MSU student said she and a 19-year-old man from Livonia got into the altercation after the man fell asleep in her dorm room while intoxicated.
