Jenison Field House to hold Hoopfest

Last March, more than 12,000 visitors flooded the East Lansing area to hoop around in Jenison Field House just as Spartan stars such as Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Gregory Kelser did years before. This year, March Magic Hoopfest is back, and with the return of the Michigan High School Athletic Association, or MHSAA, girls’ state basketball tournament to Breslin Center, even more fans will be able to participate in the two-week event.

As of Tuesday, New Mexico State’s Jahmar Young, the Aggies’ leading scorer and second leading assist man said he had never heard of MSU junior guard Kalin Lucas. Maybe Young really never heard of Lucas, but his attitude reflects a confidence the Aggies have going into Friday’s first-round NCAA Tournament matchup in Spokane, Wash.

Lansing Home and Garden Show features exhibitors, MSU club

Towering pine trees, cascading waterfalls and an endless stretch of flowers and gardens marked the beginning of the 14th annual Lansing Home and Garden Show at the MSU Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education on Thursday afternoon. The yearly show hosts around 300 exhibitors and 250 local businesses and draws in hundreds of gardening enthusiasts and spectators, running from Friday to Sunday. The show also has become a chance for the MSU Horticulture Club to show the public what it’s about.

Malaysian students to host Culture Night

The Malaysian Students Organization will host Malaysian Culture Night at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the East Lansing Hannah Community Center theater, 819 Abbot Road. The event will include multiple small performances woven into a bigger story called “When Hairi Met Se Li.”

MSU women preparing to take on familiar foe in Bowling Green

For two weeks, the MSU women’s basketball team has dealt with the sour taste of its Big Ten Tournament loss to Iowa. Now the Spartans are two wins away from being sweet again, and it all starts Saturday in the team’s first-round NCAA Tournament game against Bowling Green at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Ky.

NMSU student 'bleeds green'

New Mexico State University student Blake Knoblock grew up in Traverse City, Mich., and has been an MSU basketball fan since he can remember. Knoblock, 21, now is in his junior year and majoring in film and creative writing. This week, The State News caught up with Knoblock, who will be attending Friday’s game and asked him what he expects from Friday’s game.

Coming out of high school in Canton, Ohio, as a two-time state champion, Raymar Morgan was the go-to guy. As his career progressed, Morgan began to lose focus and become passive, letting older players handle problems and carry the load.

Because of the wild variation of emotions March can bring, some would call it the best of times. For others, it’s the worst of times. The same concept can be applied to the 64 teams that will participate in the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

Exhibit to showcase art students

Benjamin Clore’s sculpture will be displayed in the Kresge Art Museum as part of MSU’s Department of Art and Art History Master of Fine Arts Exhibition running from Saturday to April 2. Three other master’s candidates, painters Andrew Rieder, Grant Whipple and Andrea Wicklund, also are displaying their final work, a type of visual dissertation, in the exhibit.

Michigan has the perfect opportunity to transition to a cleaner, more energy efficient economy. With the American automobile industry in shambles and a lack of blue-collar jobs, now is the time to jump on the green bandwagon.
