Spartans earn split in opening games

It was a bittersweet opening weekend for the MSU women’s soccer team, which kicked off its season on Friday in College Station, Texas at the Texas A&M Aggieland Invitational. The Spartans defeated St. John’s 1-0 Friday before losing 3-0 to No. 1 North Carolina on Sunday.

Football camp update: Big-time big targets

The MSU offense heads into this season knowing that it has one of the top group of big receiving targets in the nation. How that group is used with regard to the passing attack will go a long way to determining how much the offense can score this season.

Allen to transfer to Iowa State

Former guard Chris Allen has decided to transfer to Iowa State, MSU confirmed Friday. Allen, who would have been a senior for the MSU men’s basketball team, was removed from the team Aug. 3 for failing to meet several obligations laid out by head coach Tom Izzo.

Football team practices at Ford Field

Detroit – The anticipation could be felt on the inside of Ford Field Thursday as the head coaches from both MSU and Florida Atlantic held a joint press conference and the MSU football team practiced afterward in advance of the nonconference game, which is scheduled for Sept. 11.

Football camp update: Young players hitting wall

The excitement of beginning preseason camp has subsided, and the MSU football team now is looking forward to the beginning of the regular season. Now halfway through camp, head coach Mark Dantonio said this is the time players usually hit the wall and need some extra motivation to get through the rest preseason.

A residence hall and the epicenter of the Brody Complex are nearing milestones in their respective renovations. Both projects, which total tens of millions of dollars combined, represent the grand scale of facelifts to campus buildings being carried out by MSU.

Bus route change causes controversy

Riding the bus might be a little more crowded for MSU’s East Neighborhood and River Trail Neighborhood residents this fall after a route change in the Capital Area Transportation Authority, or CATA, bus system.

Democratic committee must wait to convene

The uncertainty and tumult in Michigan’s 8th congressional district for a Democratic candidate continues, as the Michigan Secretary of State still has not received an official notarized statement from the previous nominee, as of Monday. MSU alumnus Kande Ngalamulume, the former Democratic nominee for the U.S. House seat, twice entered and retreated from the race, giving a rare opportunity for a committee to appoint a new candidate to the ballot.

MSU 'green' buildings improve worker health

Students and employees might want to think twice before going into a building that is not LEED-certified, according to a study by researchers from MSU. LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, certifications are a set of requirements to improve indoor environmental quality in buildings. Buildings that are LEED-certified have been proven to improve health in employees.

E.L. offering free bike rides for city officials

East Lansing residents might notice city officials pedaling through town after a new transportation program put into place for city employees. The East Lansing Green Task Force recently began to place bikes around the city at several facilities for employees to use when going between meetings and buildings.

Lansing Flow Fest to show local rap

Lansing Flow Fest, a Christian rap festival, will take place 5:30-10 p.m. Friday at Lansing’s Adado Riverfront Park. The fourth annual event features all ages rap and hip-hop performances by nationally and locally known Christian musicians.

Sandbox Party to discuss child issues

The Sandbox Party will hold the Sandbox Party Convention from 1-4 p.m. Aug. 26 at Breslin Center. A nonpartisan group, the Sandbox Party advocates for a wide range of early childhood issues, including pushing for an increased state investment in child care and preschools, despite Michigan’s poor economic climate and lack of government funding.
