MSU students safe in Japan, international students worry for family, friends

Seven MSU students in Japan with the Japan Center for Michigan Universities are safe after an 8.9 offshore earthquake and resulting tsunami hit the country, said Stephanie Motschenbacher, the communications director for MSU International Studies and Programs. Motschenbacher said there are no MSU study abroad trips currently in Japan, however, MSU has 79 international students from the country. MSU sent an e-mail to the 79 students this morning expressing concern for their situation and encouraging them to call the office if they need any assistance, Motschenbacher said.

2 MSU football players arrested in Colorado

Two MSU football players were arrested in Colorado early Thursday morning. Tight end Brian Linthicum was charged with third-degree assault and eluding arrest and linebacker Max Bullough was charged with a minor in position and eluding arrest, said an officer from the Pitkin County Jail. MSU Associate Athletics Director John Lewandowski said he does not know how this incident might affect the players’ status on the team and is waiting to talk to MSU football head coach Mark Dantonio. Linthicum will be a senior next season and had 18 catches for 230 yards and a touchdown last season. Bullough, a sophomore next season, had 23 tackles and an interception as a freshman last season. Both are next scheduled to appear in Pitkin County Court on April 19.

MSU academic program educates Libyan professionals

Howard Davies, the director of the London School of Economics, resigned last week after evidence was revealed linking the school to Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s regime. But the London School of Economics isn’t the only university that has found itself under scrutiny. MSU also is being examined this week for a program that educates government-sponsored students from Libya, some of whom are affiliated with the Libyan government.

Downtown developments, medical marijuana discussed by E.L. City Council

A revamp of sections of Albert Avenue and locations surrounding the Ann Street Plaza could take place this summer if construction plans discussed by the East Lansing City Council on Tuesday move forward. The council discussed the plans at its Tuesday work session at City Hall, 410 Abbot Road. The construction would consist of two separate projects, a Brownfield location located at 200 Albert Ave.
