ROTC holds spring awards ceremony

The first graduating class from MSU never made it to their graduation. All of them were deployed to fight in the Civil War. Today, MSU’s ROTC is one of the largest programs in the country, and about 50 cadets within the ROTC were honored Tuesday at the annual Spring Awards ceremony.

Weekend brings 10,000 student activists together

This past weekend, an estimated 10,000 young men and women from campuses nationwide attended the third biennial Power Shift conference. It was the biggest movement building training and strategy session ever, according to Ethan Nuss, co-field director for the Energy Action Coalition, and 42 of the attendees were our very own MSU Spartans.

Michigan State offensive lineman Arthur Ray Jr. is back on the practice field this spring for the first time since being diagnosed in 2007 with osteosarcoma – a rare type of bone cancer.

Softball, baseball games postponed

The MSU softball team’s doubleheader scheduled for today against conference foe Purdue has been postponed due to inclement weather forecasted in for the East Lansing area. The MSU baseball team also had its Tuesday matchup against Western Michigan postponed due to weather.

The MSU football team lost about a dozen or so starters from last season’s Big Ten championship team, but the good news is that its potential replacements are having a solid spring.

Success in design contest inspires student to change major

When she realized it was difficult to count on a career in the fashion industry, Kelsey Denczek-Kalczynski followed suit along with many college freshmen and switched her major. But it took just one phone call to change her mind again. Denczek-Kalczynski now is a finalist in the competition, which allows online voters to choose one of the top 10 contestants to win an internship with fashion designer Mara Hoffman this summer.

Bargaining benefits

Last Thursday, the eight members of the Graduate Employees Union bargaining team went into negotiations with the university team at 5 p.m., prepared for the long night in front of them. The union — which represents about 1,300 graduate student teaching assistants on campus and is known as the GEU — has been negotiating since February for its new three-year contract. And at 6:35 a.m.

Presidential candidates come forward

National and local news outlets have been abuzz in recent days and weeks as various presidential hopefuls enter or nudge closer to entering the race for the White House ahead of the 2012 elections. Yet for all the coverage, MSU political experts argue it largely is business as usual in the political arena. President Barack Obama announced his candidacy for re-election April 4.
