Spartan’s job at gelateria leads to future career

When Shawn Targosz first applied to Iorio’s Gelateria in Lansing, he was looking for a part-time job to help pay his bills. After some time on the job, Targosz, an advertising senior and now a partner at Iorio’s, began to enjoy working with customers as he gained a passion for being an entrepreneur.

A rhyme to end freshman year

My name is Omar Thabet, and I am a freshman at MSU pursuing a career in journalism. I am a Muslim Arab-American from the city of Hamtramck, Mich., a town near Detroit. The first article I wrote earlier in this semester was a poem about the tragedies going on in the Middle East.

Illuminating the issue

There are many rape myths Megan Spencer and Cortney Bouse want to dispel. There’s the idea that men cannot be raped; that if a person is drinking alcohol, he or she is asking for assault; that if a woman is dressed a certain way, she’s inviting abuse. The list goes on.

Prof. found guilty of plagiarism

After nearly eight months of investigation, MSU professor Sharif Shakrani was found guilty of plagiarism in findings released by a campus investigative committee this past Monday. Shakrani, a member of MSU’s Education Policy Center and a professor in the College of Education, was found to have used unattributed material during a 2010 report that examined the potential economic effects of school district consolidation on the state of Michigan. Shakrani could not be reached for comment Tuesday. Shakrani’s case had been under review since last August, after officials at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, or the Mackinac Center, began looking into the report’s accuracy.

City Council discusses 2012 budget, parking

Students and residents parking in East Lansing parking structures might have to pay a little extra. The East Lansing City Council continued its discussion on the city budget for fiscal year 2012, which included discussion on potential increases to parking fees.

Vacant hall proposed for upgrades

A historic building on campus is being examined as a possible location to expand the MSU Graduate School if the university is able to come up with several million dollars in funding. Chittenden Hall— one of the buildings located on MSU’s laboratory row along West Circle Drive — has been vacant for at least 10 years, said university engineer Bob Nestle, and several graduate student representatives would like to see the building turned into a hub for graduate students. Karen Klomparens, dean of the graduate school, said Chittenden Hall was designated as a possible location for the graduate school to move about 15 years ago when its occupants were moving out.
