Studio crawl connects students, community

Advertising senior Mark Stuenkel made his way around Old Town Lansing Thursday afternoon with a notebook and copies of his résumé as he visited different creative companies during the fourth annual Mid-Michigan Creative Alliance Studio Crawl.

Academics deserve more attention

For nearly 50 years, I have taught freshman writing in the U. S. and overseas. My model for teaching and academic life came from a small liberal arts college — Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. For 38 years, however, the environment in which I have taught has been MSU — a large university where, too often, research and athletics reign.

Take alleged illegal mail search seriously

It’s obviously bad that allegations of city workers going through students’ mail exist at all. What’s worse is that it allegedly has been happening since at least September 2009, according to email obtained by The State News. And the worst part is the East Lansing City Council knew about this alleged misconduct in 2009 and has taken no steps to resolve the issue.

Wrestler turned football walk-on makes key plays

Sophomore linebacker Kyler Elsworth was recruited for wrestling, but turned down his scholarship to try out for the MSU football team. Now in his second year on the field, Elsworth has gone from being a walk-on to being a key player against Wisconsin — blocking a punt that was recovered for a touchdown for the Spartans before halftime in their 37-31 victory.

Mark Hollis believes he’s an educator ­— and with good reason. With hundreds of student-athletes at MSU each year, the athletics director heads a program responsible for the growth of those students academically, socially and athletically.
