Lansing man tied to local robberies

A string of local robberies have been linked to 24-year-old Lansing resident Travis Fee, who was arraigned Tuesday and charged as a habitual offender with three counts of first-degree home invasion in East Lansing and two counts of home invasion in Meridian Township, East Lansing police Lt. Jeff Murphy said.

MSU’s enrollment higher, out-of-state draw rising

As more and more students become Spartans and the university’s national enrollment ranking remains among the top 10 largest American universities, MSU continues to increase its out-of-state draw. MSU has the eighth highest enrollment in the nation, according to data from universities’ websites.

Spartans claim victory over Western Michigan Broncos

For the MSU baseball team, the hits didn’t just come early and often Wednesday afternoon at McLane Baseball Stadium at Old College Field. They also came at the right times, as the Spartans (23-12 overall, 5-4 Big Ten) registered 16 hits, including a trio of two-out RBI doubles, on the way to a 13-3 win over Western Michigan (16-18).

Students march to battle sexual violence

At 13 years old, Kari Edington woke up one morning and decided she didn’t want to take the domestic sexual abuse she was experiencing anymore. She fled to Madison, Wis., where she came across a Take Back the Night march and realized she was not alone.

ASMSU voter turnout still below Big Ten rivals

The ASMSU representative elections held last week showed an increased voter turnout from last year with an 8.8 percent voter turnout among all undergraduates, more than double the turnout the group got in last year’s elections. About 2.8 percent of undergraduates participated in last year’s elections, according to past State News stories.

Proposed budget shows future deficit in East Lansing street repair funds

Funding for local and major street projects and subsequent repairs is set to fluctuate across the next few years in East Lansing, based on budget projections presented Tuesday to the East Lansing City Council. East Lansing Director of Public Works Todd Sneathen and Finance Director Mary Haskell presented documents to the council at City Hall, 410 Abbot Road, prior to its regular meeting, detailing changes that project a deficit at the start of the next fiscal year in the city’s fund for major street repairs.

After taking care of business against Western Michigan on Tuesday, the MSU baseball team has little chance to rest before getting back to work for the rest of its week. Continuing a seasonlong pursuit of capturing midweek games against in-state opponents, the Spartans (23-12 overall, 5-4 Big Ten) hit the road for a 3:05 p.m. matchup with Central Michigan on Wednesday at Theunissen Stadium in Mount Pleasant, Mich.

Caring for veterans worthy cause

Looking back on many of my articles, I find I have been giving off a very cynical and pessimistic vibe. I suppose I should clarify that I am not really as negative as I seem in my writing, although I have found the best way to stir up a conversation is by writing about controversial topics that often take on a less than optimistic tone.

If you’re a motorcyclist in Michigan, you are about 37 times as likely as car occupants to die in a traffic crash per vehicle mile, according to the Michigan State Police website. It’s a terrifying number, and it’s one that’s going to get a lot scarier because of one new Michigan law.

Maxwell suffers sprained knee, return unknown for spring practices

Before Tuesday’s spring football practice, head coach Mark Dantonio addressed the media and revealed that during Saturday’s scrimmage, junior quarterback Andrew Maxwell sprained his knee and may or may not return for the remaining spring practices. Dantonio said the sprain will not require surgery, but that redshirt freshman Connor Cook will take most of the reps with the first team offense and likely play for both sides in the scheduled April 28 spring game.

Pride Week under way for LBGT community

On Friday, MSU students will show their colors at the Pride Parade during Pride Week, the largest campus celebration of the lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender community of the year. “It’s a chance … to show we’re a unique community, but also to show that everyone is unique, and in that uniqueness, we are all the same,” said Travis Lunsford, vice chair-elect of The Alliance of Queer and Ally Students.
