State Rep. Bob Genetski's license suspended

After refusing a Breatalyzer test in January, State Rep. Bob Genetski, R-Saugatuck, had his driver’s license suspended during an administrative court. Genetski was pulled over by MSU police officer Casey Christman for speeding and expired plates on Jan. 19. Christman testified there was a strong odor of intoxicants coming from Genetski’s vehicle that led to the Breathalyzer test and other field tests.

Stores see decrease in sales because of restrictive keg laws

A law put into place last fall that requires stricter oversight of customers who buy kegs cut some East Lansing keg sales during St. Patrick’s Day, students and business owners said. The law, which went into effect in November 2011, requires a tag with the buyer’s information and name to be attached to kegs, a move lawmakers hoped would curb underage drinking.

Columbus, Ohio — The MSU men’s basketball team gained a lot in identity this weekend after earning a trip to Phoenix and the Sweet 16 on Thursday. Three days ago, the media heard a lot of talk from LIU Brooklyn about how slow-paced the Spartans are.

MSU Rifle Club members locked, loaded

Last week while the MSU men’s and women’s basketball teams were gearing up for a championship run, Tyler Luce was helping the MSU Rifle Club win its own championship. Luce, an accounting freshman, participated in the National Rifle Association Intercollegiate Rifle Club Championships on March 13 through 17 at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga., helping his team to their first championship title since the MSU Rifle and Pistol Club was formed in 2004.

Anime enthusiasts gather for Shuto Con

Theresa Ford grabbed a life-sized sling shot in the hopes of knocking over Angry Birds plush stuffed animals stacked on a tower of cardboard boxes Sunday afternoon. The computer engineering sophomore was among hundreds of anime enthusiasts who gathered for the Shuto Con Anime Convention at the Lansing Center, 333 E. Michigan Ave. The convention was held Friday through Sunday with various activities including gaming rooms, dodgeball tournaments and a life-sized version of the popular app Angry Birds.

Wrestlers come up short of All-American honors at NCAAs

Before six members of the MSU wrestling team left for St. Louis to participate in the NCAA Tournament beginning on Thursday, competing junior heavyweight Steve Andrus said he felt there was no reason all six wrestlers couldn’t come back with All-American status. However, by Friday night, each of the Spartan wrestlers had been eliminated from the tournament with senior 174-pounder Curran Jacobs coming within an overtime 3-1 decision of his first All-American honors.

Indian culture highlighted by Satrang at Auditorium

As East-meets-West mixtures of American and Indian music filled the Auditorium on Friday evening, many students couldn’t help but bob their heads and tap their feet to the powerful beats of Satrang 2012: Afsana. About 500 students, friends and families attended the Coalition of Indian Undergraduate Students’, or CIUS, annual show to celebrate the multiple facets of Indian culture.

Appling benefits from Billikens' sag defense

Coming into the game against Saint Louis, the MSU men’s basketball team knew it would be well defended against. The Billikens are praised for their defense and were extremely physical and abusive to the Spartans. At least all the Spartans not named Keith Appling. The Billikens sagged of the sophomore guard and dared him to shoot. Appling has struggled with his shot all season, but he can still find the bucket when needed.

Warmer temperatures help bring more business to MSU

At the end of March last year, MSU was preparing for another snowfall, and students were bundling up in coats and boots to walk across campus. But this year, the warmer weather is kicking off what could be one of the busiest seasons for campus organizations in the past five years and giving students sunny days to look forward to.

Hockey earns No. 4 seed in NCAA Tournament

The NCAA unveiled its 2012 tournament field on Sunday, and the MSU hockey team has a new lease on life. The Spartans (19-15-4 overall, 14-11-3-2 CCHA) earned a bid as the No. seed in the East Region in the 2012 NCAA Tournament and will open against Eastern College Athletic Conference champion and No. 1-seed Union on Friday in Bridgeport, Conn. With the bid, the Spartans rank fourth in all-time tournament appearances with 27 and are in the tournament for the first time since 2008.
