Travelers take technology on vacation

Vacations are meant to be a time to relax and get away from the stress of daily life, but a recent study by an MSU professor and two graduate students conducted using survey data from 2005 to 2007 found travelers are using technology and staying in touch with people back home while on vacation more than ever.

Construction on The Lodges Halted

Construction on Phase II of The Lodges of East Lansing was delayed indefinitely when the Meridian Township Board of Directors voted to deny a special use permit for Capstone Development to construct a group of buildings more than 25,000 square feet at its June 19 meeting. Earlier, the board reversed a pair of decisions, voting to approve a mixed use permit and a wetland permit, but the final special use permit stalled with a 4-3 vote against approval.

MSU students sign petition to protest dog killings

After Connecticut resident and East Coast Italian Greyhound Rescue volunteer Catherine White heard a former MSU graduate student allegedly had killed the breed closest to her heart, it struck a chord with her and her co-workers. “We were all very horrified by the whole thing,” she said. Those appalled feelings regarding the case of Andrew Thompson led White to follow the case until his sentencing on June 13.

East Lansing has a music scene?

Tabbert Wakley recognizes East Lansing’s music scene is struggling. With a lack of venues for musicians to perform at and a decreasing interest in live music, the city’s once-vibrant musical culture simply isn’t what it once was. But Wakley, who currently is studying music management at Lansing Community College, said he is hopeful he can help revive it.

Face Time with Caroline Powers

One of the more under-the-radar Spartan athletes in 2011-12 was also one of the most successful. Junior golfer Caroline Powers has amassed an exemplary career in three years in East Lansing, even being called “one of the best athletes at Michigan State,” by her coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll.

Thoughts from abroad

There are a lot of cemeteries in England. This was one of the first significant observations I made upon my arrival last month. During my seven hours on the train traveling from Cambridge to St Andrews in Scotland, I noticed in addition to the rolling green hills, small towns and villages we passed, there were an incredible number of graveyards, expansive enough to be easily visible from the moving train.

Gov. Rick Snyder took the liberty of signing a series of bills into law Tuesday that ban the use, sale or possession of synthetic marijuana substances including K2 and Spice, and other synthetic drugs like bath salts.

Gov. Rick Snyder signed a series of bills into law Tuesday banning the use, sale or possession of synthetic marijuana substances including K2 and Spice, ending a long effort by legislators to take the substances off store shelves. Snyder said the ban, which will take effect July 1, is long overdue and is a proactive attempt to stop similar drug problems before they grow out of hand. The drugs, which are dried herbs or spices sprayed with chemicals, have become more popular in recent years with young people as an alternative to marijuana, but some law enforcement officials say the substances can be harmful. “This is a situation that’s had tragic effects,” Snyder said.

Presidential candidate Romney makes stop in DeWitt

When Ann Romney stepped up to the microphone in DeWitt, Mich., Tuesday afternoon and held up the palm of her hand, the crowd erupted in cheers. Standing in front of hundreds of supporters, she pointed to places on her hand corresponding to places in the state she and her husband, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, had lived. “Mitt and I are Michiganders, as you know,” she said.

The American Red Cross strike in Michigan and Ohio came to an end Tuesday, according to the Office and Professional Employees International Union press release.

Cooling centers offer relief from dangerous temperatures

Rising temperatures in Greater Lansing have reached dangerous levels as the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids has issued a hazardous weather outlook for Ingham County for Tuesday and Wednesday. The city of East Lansing has responded by providing a cooling center at the Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road.

MSU could see less orange barrels in near future

With the upcoming Harrison and Trowbridge roads intersection construction project, the MSU community might see some relief from a few less orange barrels near campus. The Harrison and Trowbridge intersection will be completely closed beginning at 8 p.m Wednesday, but is scheduled to reopen to traffic by 6 a.m.
