Renewable Energy Coalition launches campaign to stop initiative

The Clean Affordable Renewable Energy for Michigan Coalition met on the 22nd floor of the Boji Tower in downtown Lansing Friday morning, to launch a campaign to stop the 25 X 25 Ballot Initiative. According to the press release, “The ballot proposal would amend Michigan’s Constitution to require Michigan to produce 25 percent of its electricity from renewable sources such as wind, solar, hydro and biomass by 2025, regardless of the cost to electric customers.” Senator Mike Nofs, R-Battle Creek, said his office spent 16 hours reviewing the 2008 bill that currently is in effect and requires Michigan to produce 10 percent of its energy from renewable sources. “We looked at all the options available to Michigan and set up a plan,” Nofs said.

Snyder signs legislation for $300 million more in public university funding

Gov. Rick Snyder signed legislation Monday granting more than $300 million to Michigan public universities to improve campus construction projects, among which is $30 million toward a bioengineering facility at MSU. MSU will receive the funding toward the research facility near the Life Sciences Building and Clinical Center, which was approved last year by the MSU Board of Trustees and will cost a total of $40 million. The remaining $10 million in funding will come from the general fund, according to Barbara Kranz, director of MSU Facilities Planning and Space Management. Kranz said she sent a capital outlay request to the state in January asking for the funding. The new facility, which still is in a design phase, will connect with the Life Sciences Building and Clinical Center to create a lab layout for procedural work and office space. It is expected to combine the research of the College of Human Medicine and the College of Engineering to promote bioengineering and health services. Finding nationalism in form of chili dog

Saturday, I sat at the counter of Ben’s Chili Bowl in Washington, D.C., and ate an absurdly delicious chili dog and a side of fries. Ben’s is a quintessentially cliché destination on any D.C. tourist’s list of must-sees, and I knew I had to see it at some point while I worked for the summer in our nation’s capital.
