The city of Ann Arbor is simply hated by most Spartans because of the passionate rivalry between MSU and the University of Michigan. However, Ann Arbor also is known as home for this Spartan, which has created a unique transition into college for me.

As one of 131 American Indian students enrolled at MSU, French senior Sean Patrick works four jobs, pays his own bills and faces the looming payback of student loans after graduation. “I am completely on my own,” said Patrick, who is not officially recognized by an American Indian tribe, but is co-chair of the North American Indigenous Student Organization, or NAISO.

A week after mathematics professor John McCarthy had an apparent meltdown in front of his students, mathematics department chair and professor Yang Wang said the professor’s condition is improving after an outpouring of support from colleagues and students.

Spartans come back in Indiana

Mark Dantonio didn’t have much to smile about following the MSU football team’s 31-27 victory over Indiana in Bloomington on Saturday. The Spartans (4-2 overall, 1-1 Big Ten) came into the game heavily favored to deliver another drubbing to the Hoosiers (2-3 overall, 0-2 Big Ten) after last year’s 55-3 blowout in Spartan Stadium.

Libertarian conference experiences growth

Libertarians could prove a force to be reckoned with in future elections if a growing number of MSU students and college supporters keep gaining momentum. About 100 students gathered at the Business College Complex on Saturday to hear from various academic leaders, advocates of libertarianism and notably, U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, R-Mich.

ASMSU sets goals as part of retreat

MSU’s undergraduate student government set its sights on the international student fee, student athlete representation and undergraduate student entrepreneurship and research following the ASMSU retreat this past weekend in Wyoming, Mich., said Chris McClain, vice president for student programming.
