City Council deliberates smoking ban

East Lansing City Council discussed prohibiting smoking in three city buildings during its Tuesday work session, which would modify an ordinance requiring smokers to be 50 feet away from municipal buildings.

East Lansing City Council members are expected to discuss several topics at their Tuesday work session, including the location of taxicabs in the city, a resolution about the proposed closing of the downtown East Lansing Secretary of State branch office and the CATA/Michigan Avenue project.

Loomis appointed to 2nd term as mayor

East Lansing City Council members Vic Loomis and Diane Goddeeris were granted a second run as the city’s mayor and mayor pro tem at yesterday’s East Lansing City Council meeting at City Hall, 410 Abbot Road.

Beard, Loomis win E.L. seats

After a long campaign period, Mayor Vic Loomis and Councilmember Kevin Beard were re-elected to their seats on the East Lansing City Council for another four years. Loomis, who has been on the council since 2001 and mayor since 2007, received 1,662 votes, and Beard, who has been on the council since 2005, received 1,638 votes in Tuesday’s election to fill two open seats on the council. About 8.74 percent of East Lansing’s 28,101 registered voters cast ballots in the election, East Lansing City Clerk Nicole Evans said.

Today is the day for East Lansing residents to cast their votes to determine who will fill the two open seats on the East Lansing City Council. Anyone registered to vote in East Lansing is eligible to participate in the election.

Local man Loomis runs for re-election

Vic Loomis is a family man. Despite his busy schedule, he rarely misses a soccer game or a parent-teacher conference for his two young daughters. It’s part of the dedication the mayor has to his family, which he said carries over to dedication for the city of East Lansing and its residents.

Beard seeks 2nd council term

Kevin Beard is a problem solver. He solved problems for more than 30 years in the human resources department at General Motors and has resolved conflicts in local government for the past four years as a member of the East Lansing City Council. Now, Beard hopes to continue seeking resolutions between the city of East Lansing and its residents.
