While many MSU students use spring break to party or lie on the beach, others will use the time off to help the environment. Alternative Spring Break, or ASB, is a student organization that allows students to use their week off for service activities. The trips are divided into nine categories, ranging from those with an environmental focus to disaster relief.
The Marketing Mix and the MSU Marketing Association, or MSUMA, will team up to bring students the first-ever Marketing Workshop and Career Fair at 3 p.m. today at the Union. Several additions were made this year to MSUMA’s annual Career Fair, said marketing senior Molly Vu, vice president of communication for the Marketing Mix.

For ASMSU Student Assembly Chairperson Mike Webber, this semester has been about as good as they come. Webber said through teamwork and individual determination, the assembly has succeeded together, and hopes next spring will continue to thrive.

Findings from a recent government study will help researchers in gauging the effectiveness of preventative treatments for cancers associated with human papillomavirus, or HPV. The report, released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention earlier this month, said about 25,000 cases of HPV-associated cancers occurred annually between 1998 and 2003.
Josh Rabinowitz and his wife adopted their daughter from Kazakhstan almost two years ago. Rabinowitz, an Ann Arbor resident, traveled to East Lansing on Sunday for the MSU Global Festival after learning of it through a support group for families with adopted Kazakh children.
About 150 protesters braved the cold Saturday night to attend an Alliance of Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, Transgender and Straight Ally Students’ rally for equal rights. The rally, one of six in Michigan, was held at the rock on Farm Lane and protested the outcome of the Nov. 4 election result of California’s Proposition 8, a ban against same-sex marriage.

The car’s frame was formed five years ago and has since been modified several times. MSU’s growing Solar Car Team has the manpower to complete the car by spring, said Lindsay Karn, the team’s public relations manager and an elementary education sophomore.
Issues brought up in Tuesday’s ASMSU Academic Assembly meeting centered upon textbook costs and students struggling to pay for them. Christopher Kulesza, chairperson of the assembly, spoke in his State of the Assembly speech about the need to keep the organization’s commitment to fight for a watchful eye on what books are used in classes to help reduce the amount of books students need to buy.

If a group of MSU students has its way, other students won’t shower today. Students for Peace and Justice — or SPJ — are sponsoring the No Shower Day in order to combat water waste. The purpose is to get students and the community thinking about the impact they have on water waste, said Maureen Nagy, a public relations officer for SPJ.

MSU’s University Activities Board walked away from the National Association for Campus Activities’ 2008 Mid America Regional Conference with six awards for its work throughout the past year.
