W-crew team inks 6 recruits

MSU head crew coach Bebe Bryans announced six athletes signed National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, creating the “strongest recruiting class,” she’s ever had. Kristin Dooley (Baldwinsville, N.Y.), Ashley Johnson (Park Hills, Ken.), Ashley Goosen (Rockford, Mich.), Valerie Lincoln (Fremont, Mich.) and Sarah Brady (Attica, Mich.) will join a team that has competed in the NCCA Championship the last four years. The women’s crew team also has placed first in three of its four meets this fall season. The team captured first and second place at Head of the Cuyahoga, took two first-place finishes at Head of the Ohio and dominated its only home meet, Head of the Grand, taking first place in every event. The Spartans compete again in the spring at the President’s Cup in Tampa, Fla., in March.

Alaska-Fairbanks series only second road test of season

Fewer than two months into the season, Alaska-Fairbanks has already appeared on and disappeared from the national radar. The perennial doormat Nanooks, under head coach Guy Gadowsky, won six of their first seven games and began garnering attention from pollsters across the country. That was until Fairbanks (6-6-0 overall, 2-6-0 CCHA) dropped five straight contests - a streak it’s trying to break at home against No.

SOCCER

Baum relished NCAAs after 32 years sans postseason

While the MSU men’s soccer players hustled in pregame drills for Sunday’s NCAA Tournament matchup with Indiana, head coach Joe Baum nonchalantly meandered across the field.Baum’s relaxed attitude was surprising, considering the game was bigger than any the Spartans had played since Baum was on the team 32 years ago.But behind that calm demeanor, Baum admitted he was living up the moment.“It was a great feeling,” he said.

Thou shall kill: Icers nix power plays

In addition to sitting atop the CCHA standings, MSU also leads many of the league’s team statistical categories.Through 13 games, the Spartans have scored more goals (3.62 per game) while giving up fewer (1.69) and have also killed off a greater percentage of opponents’ power plays (.894) than any other team.MSU head coach Ron Mason particularly enjoys that third statistic.“Our penalty kill’s been phenomenal,” MSU head coach Ron Mason said of the unit that is ranked eighth nationally.

Titans shoot, turnover like U

The statistics haven’t been pretty, but the MSU women’s basketball team has put together a winning record early in its season. The Spartans (4-1) look to continue their success as they take on Detroit (1-1) at 7 p.m.

VOLLEYBALL

Hartley says goodbye with win

When junior middle blocker Angela Morley stepped behind the service line with the score 29-24 Saturday night against Indiana at Jenison Field House, fellow Spartan volleyball player senior outside hitter Erin Hartley took a look around. And she didn’t look specifically at anything, she looked at what would soon be just a memory.“There were certain times out on the court, like when it was 29-24, when I said to myself, ‘this is the last point before I’m done here,’” Hartley said.

FOOTBALL

Thornhill rewarded for abilities

MSU senior linebacker Josh Thornhill was selected Monday as the recipient of the John S. Pingel Award by the Michigan Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. The Pingel award, based on academic and athletic performance, is named in honor of the former Spartan All-America halfback and National Football Foundation Hall of Famer.
