Fundraiser aims to raise awareness about camp

The dulcet tones of Hanson’s “MMMbop” could be heard blaring from a boombox Monday afternoon at the Wells Hall bridge as student volunteers attempted to raise money and awareness for children whose parents have or have had cancer. The musically-inclined Stop the Bop fundraiser was hosted by members of the MSU chapter of Camp Kesem.

Office of Financial Aid adds more security

Students and guests wishing to speak with MSU’s Office of Financial Aid staff this spring concerning student records soon will have to further confirm their identity by answering one of three security questions. In compliance with the 1974 Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, or FERPA, MSU officials will implement additional security measures to ensure identity before a person obtains confidential records and financial aid information, said Val Meyers, associate director for the MSU Office of Financial Aid.

International Education Week events occurring all weeklong

In honor of International Education Week, a nationwide event celebrating international relations between the United States and other countries, the MSU community will join together to celebrate diversity at the university. MSU will host several events throughout the week, including the Global Festival on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

Diwali celebrated at MSU

Diwali Bash 2010 was organized by the Indian Student Organization and funded by various groups, including the International Students Association. The event was held Sunday evening at the Spartan Village Community Center, 1460 Middlevale Road.

SCOUT BANANA fundraises for children in Africa

Austin Melcher has been to Africa and has seen the potential in the people there — but money and resources are lacking. So Melcher participated in a fundraising soccer tournament hosted by the MSU chapter of SCOUT BANANA Saturday at Munn field to benefit an after-school program in South Africa, helping children affected by HIV/AIDS.

MSU Quidditch team competes in World Cup

Bludgers, beaters, chasers and seekers, keepers, quaffles and, of course, the golden snitch. With more than 750 college students running around with broomsticks and capes, the average Muggle might get overwhelmed. The MSU Quidditch team was one of the 46 teams that competed in the International Quidditch Association, or IQA, fourth annual Quidditch World Cup Saturday and Sunday at DeWitt Clinton Park, in New York City.

Campus Crusade holds prayer event

During a time when most college students would be preparing for a night out on the town, crowds of students from across Michigan gathered at Riverview Church, 3585 Willoughby Road, in Holt, Mich., to reflect on their spiritual lives.

Legislation to condemn the Westboro Baptist Church’s presence in Michigan was passed on Thursday at ASMSU Academic Assembly’s Code and Academic Policy Committee meeting.

Westboro Baptist Church to protest in E.L.

The Westboro Baptist Church, notorious for picketing military funerals, will picket outside of East Lansing High School on Thursday. The church selected the school as a picket location because of e-mails the church received from the students regarding its picketing of soldier’s funerals, said Shirley Phelps-Roper, a member of and attorney for the Westboro Baptist Church. The picketers plan to go to the school at 2:50 p.m.
