The first step in a $2 million plan to revamp city parking structures is set to begin early this week. Crews will begin renovating the Grove Street parking structure and repaving concrete curbs, ramps and stairwells, as well as upgrading the building’s lighting and elevator systems, Planning & Community Development Director Tim Dempsey said.

Prospective employees at Lansing’s Sparrow Hospital will have to be nicotine-free in accordance with a new hospital policy that went into effect May 1. The policy prohibits the hiring of any employee who tests positive for nicotine or tobacco and is part of an initiative that Sparrow took to help promote healthier lives throughout mid-Michigan. John Foren, a spokesman for Sparrow Hospital, said implementation of the new hiring policy was going well. Foren declined to comment further on the policy. Teri Wilson, a consultant and researcher for the Michigan Department of Community Health, said testing for tobacco is done by assessing the level of cotinine, a metabolite of nicotine, in a person’s system.

When Lindsay Karn and her teammates stepped on the track at the Formula Sun Grand Prix in Indianapolis May 6, she knew all of her hard work finally had paid off. After years of designing, building and testing, the MSU Solar Car Racing Team was finally ready to race. “Hitting that first lap just meant the world to us,” Karn, an MSU alumna, said.
Summertime in East Lansing can seem quiet and uneventful compared to the fall and spring semesters. With students returning home for the summer, the usually busy streets can seem desolate.
This summer, homegrown beef will be making its way to the MSU cafeterias with the help of a group of students in the beef management program. Through the fall, the beef will be served in the Case Hall cafeteria and Brody Square, said Kurt Kwiatkowski, corporate chef for MSU Culinary Services. Kwiatkowski said he is excited to see the fruits of what has been a year-long process. “This is a long-term thing we hope grows and continues to develop,” he said.
After months of smoothing out the details, the East Lansing City Council likely will approve the budget for the 2012 fiscal year.
