Many students do not realize insurance plans can change when they leave for college, said Bob Pierce, CEO of the Michigan Association of Insurance Agents, which released the survey conducted by Insurance Agents & Brokers of America. He said most insurance policies will let a college student be listed as a dependent only if he or she is a full-time student, leaving part-time students to fend for themselves. When the student moves away to go to school, the parents should contact their insurance agent to determine how much coverage the student will have, Pierce said.
