Series to address violence against women

The Spring 2010 Colloquium Series is slated for 1:30 p.m. Feb. 19 in Room 302 of the International Center and will feature the presentation MSU’s Violence Against Women Research and Outreach Initiative: Impacting Policy and Practice Through Feminist Action Research.

MSU researchers receive nearly $1.5m in fed funds

MSU received $1,483,194 in U.S. Department of Agriculture research grants for animal health and production, according to USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture, or NIFA. MSU is among more than 30 universities to receive a share of the $24 million in funding.

Olin's sex education group performs skits

Olin Health Center’s In Your Face Theater Troupe, a group of nine students, travel across campus performing skits to highlight different aspects of students’ sexual behavior. On Tuesday, the troupe brought its act to Holmes Hall and performed a series of skits for about 45 students.

Anna Pegler-Gordon, an associate professor in MSU’s James Madison College was awarded the 2009 Theodore Saloutos book prize of the Immigration and Ethnic History Society for her book.

NBA, MSU player promotes new book

Former MSU basketball player and retired NBA veteran Eric Snow spoke Tuesday to a crowd of more than 30 people in Wells Hall while promoting his book, “Leading High Performers: The Ultimate Guide to Being a Fast, Fluid and Flexible Leader.” Snow graduated from MSU in 1995 and, most recently, played with the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers and served as an analyst on NBA TV.

MSU to offer hybrid online doctorate program

In an attempt to reach out to potential doctoral students who are unable to hold full-time jobs while attending classes, MSU’s College of Education will offer a hybrid course option beginning this summer for the educational psychology and educational technology doctoral program.

Grad conference planned for Feb. 19

The Graduate Conference III will be held from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Union. The free event will focus on performances and panels on concentrations in the college of Arts and Letters.

MSU stays Mich. leader in Peace Corps volunteers

MSU is No. 1 in Michigan and No. 4 in the U.S. for producing Peace Corps volunteers, according to the 2010 rankings released by the Peace Corps organization. Despite dropping one place since last year’s rankings, MSU maintained its place among the leaders in producing volunteers this year.

James Madison College holds career fair

Before Laura Casey graduated from MSU in 1993, the James Madison College alumna and OnStar satellite radio services manager said she had a “major of the week” during her sophomore year. “I would pull out the big course book and every week I’d write out a new career and post it on the wall,” she said.

MSU hosts children's chess tournament

Elementary and middle school students from across the state took over the Union on Saturday with family, coaches, teachers and chess boards in tow. Students filled the first floor of the building as early as 7 a.m. with coolers, blankets, pillows and folding chairs in anticipation of the Michigan Scholastic Chess Tournament. Playing with their friends, tournament competitors laughed and chased each other in the hallways and outside. As the tournament commenced, however, the atmosphere upstairs became much more serious.

2009 donations decline at MSU, across country

Donations to MSU in 2009 fell 4 percent from the previous year, but the drop was lower than the Big Ten average, according to a survey released Wednesday. The report, released by the Council for Aid to Education, or CAE, found the national average in giving decreased 12 percent between July 1, 2008, to June 30, 2009. The Big Ten averaged about a 10 percent decrease. More than 1,000 institutions participated in the survey.
