State of the State Survey reveals low consumer confidence

Consumer confidence still is low compared to past years, but the numbers show signs of improvement, according to a survey by economics professor Charles Ballard. Out of the 991 people between the ages of 18 to 95 surveyed, 32 of whom were age 25 or under, 54 percent felt they were worse off compared to one year ago. Although Ballard said the number might look bad on paper, it is the lowest since 2007.

Campus group hosts 15th annual Latin Xplosion

Cultural de las Razas Unidas hosted its 15th annual Latin Xplosion “Carnival” Friday at the Auditorium for more than 500 students. The cultural show consisted of 14 acts including singing, dancing, poetry, a band and several fashion shows.

2,822 homes get food

About 5,000 volunteers from 33 different churches came together to distribute almost 3,000 boxes of food to families across Greater Lansing as part of the Church of Greater Lansing’s Food Drop 2010. The Church of Greater Lansing is a network of churches in the Lansing area, and most are Christian denominations.

Students join service-based pageant

Seven female MSU students competed for the title of Miss Michigan State on Friday at the Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road. Five judges, including guest judge Tom Herzog, a junior center from the MSU men’s basketball team, scored the contestants based on their talent performance, a two-question interview and service to the community.

PIN number scam hits MSU's campus

A scam involving fraudulent checks is making its way around campus. Throughout the past few weeks, individuals have been approaching students on campus — typically in residence halls — and asking for their ATM or Visa debit cards and pin numbers.

Enrollment in MSU College of Nursing shows slowed growth

In the 2009-10 academic year, the number of undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in MSU’s College of Nursing increased by 1.9 percent, according to data from the Office of the Registrar. Enrollment in the college climbed by a smaller percentage in 2010 than was seen in previous years, following a national slowing in the eight-year boom of enrollment in nursing programs.

Kresge director will step down in May

Susan J. Bandes, director of Kresge Art Museum, will step down from the position May 1, according to a statement from MSU. Bandes is expected to pursue teaching at MSU while she remains a full-time professor for the Department of Art and Art History.

For Elizabeth Convery, Wednesday marked a new beginning. The communication senior was one of more than 6,000 students who attended St. John Catholic Student Center, 327 M.A.C. Ave., Wednesday to mark the start of Lent, the 40-day period, excluding Sundays, prior to Easter celebrated by Roman Catholics, Episcopalians and Lutherans.

Grant funds music therapy program

The MSU Community Music School in East Lansing received a $2,000 grant from CVS Caremark, a segment of CVS/pharmacy, for its music therapy program. The money will allow school officials to offer more music therapy programs and give officials an opportunity to provide some financial aid for families.

MSU to partner with single London campus

All MSU study abroad programs in London will be centralized at one campus beginning this summer, following a partnership with Regent’s College in London. Prior to the agreement, MSU’s London study abroad programs were not coordinated on a single campus, said Brett Berquist, director of MSU’s Office of Study Abroad.
