The Residences, Hopcat will benefit downtown E.L.

Cron Management is well underway to bringing an altitudinous twist to the typical East Lansing apartment with the construction of a ten story building. As construction continues, The Residences, 211 Ann St., are set to be completed by August just in time for fall move-in. Cron Management Manager and Associate Broker Julie Barrett-Horan declined to give detail on the progress of the construction.

ELPD continues to work daily on sexual assault cases

The East Lansing Police Department, or ELPD, still is investigating the slew of sexual assaults that took place near the end of April and continued through May, with the most recent assault taking place on May 16, ELPD Captain Jeff Murphy said. “There fortunately haven’t been any more (assaults), but unfortunately we haven’t identified a suspect,” Murphy said. “We still have several open tips that we can’t close yet because the detective is still working on them.”

Obama appoints MSU graduate to CFPB

After months of delays, MSU graduate Richard Cordray was appointed the Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, or CFPB on Tuesday with a 66-34 vote in the U.S. Senate. A 1981 legal and political theory graduate from MSU, Cordray went on to attend the University of Oxford, as well as the University of Chicago Law School. During his junior year, he had his first taste of politics, serving as an intern for U.S. Senator John Glenn. Cordray later went on to serve as the treasurer and later the Attorney General of Ohio until being picked by Obama to head up the CFPB.

With the city of East Lansing’s Play in the Park series starting Tuesday, families have a new way to make the most of the summer. Play in the Park is an interactive children’s entertainment series that takes place at 7 p.m. every Tuesday in July at Valley Court Park, 280 Valley Court.

Lansing police respond to moped armed robbery Tuesday

Lansing police officers responded to an incident this morning on a weapons complaint. The victim, a female Lansing resident, informed the officers that she and others had been threatened by two subjects riding a stolen moped while armed, according to Lansing Public Information Officer Robert Merritt. When the officers arrived to the scene, they were able to locate the two suspects on the moped before a chase ensued on foot. One suspect threw the weapon and continued running, but was caught and placed into custody. The second suspect was not located by the officers. His identify currently is being investigated, Merritt said.

E.L. officials are looking to create more diverse restaurant scene

Imagine it’s your birthday. You and your friends want to go out for dinner. The question is, where do you go? Peanut Barrel? Noodles & Company? Georgio’s Pizza? Somewhere else in downtown East Lansing? Maybe head out to P.F. Chang’s in Eastwood Towne Center? If it was any other night, a super dub from Menna’s Joint might be enough, but what about a special occasion when you’re willing to spend a bit more cash?

Local woman assaulted yesterday evening

Yesterday evening, a female victim was assaulted at the East Lansing Family Aquatic Center, 6400 Abbot Road, at approximately 5 p.m. The suspect, a male, was gone when the East Lansing police officers arrived on the scene. The police report has yet to be turned into the police department to be processed.

24th annual auto show held in Grand Ledge

A Viking Blue 1976 Cutlass Supreme won State Sen. Rick Jones’s favorite car choice this year at the 24th annual Ledges Classic Auto Show at Fitzgerald Park in Grand Ledge Saturday afternoon. Since 1989, Fitzgerald Park has hosted Grand Ledge’s annual auto show during the second weekend in July, where people can enjoy a few days of music, prizes, awards, food and classic cars, some dating back over 100 years.

East Lansing community photo contest requests submissions

Lansing Community College student Lang Thai always considered photography a hobby, but he never thought his nighttime photo of Spartan Stadium would land him a $50 Meijer gift card. This July, Thai seeks to continue his successful photography run in the East Lansing Community Photo Contest, where community members of all ages are invited to display their photogenic talent by submitting up to five photos taken in East Lansing.

Locals respond to Trayvon Martin controversial verdict

Seated on a lawn chair on the divider on Grand River Avenue, graduate student Joseph Harris single-handedly protested the verdict of the controversial Trayvon Martin case on Sunday night. As the New York Times reported, in February 2012, Martin, a 17-year old black male was shot to death by George Zimmerman in Florida.

Senate bill fails to pass, loan interest will double

In a turbulent past few weeks for indebted college students, with federally subsidized student interest rates doubling on July 1 to 6.8 percent, the news from Washington, D.C., on Wednesday offers no relief for concerned parents and students. With a 51-49 vote, the Keep Student Loans Affordable Act of 2013 failed to reach cloture, which would have ended debate and allowed for voting on approval by the Senate, falling nine votes shy of the required 60.

Lansing area boasts premier fishing resources

With a few warm and sunny days in Lansing, one way to take advantage of the heat is to go fishing. Lansing provides bountiful of opportunities to fish, and the changing fish species through spring and fall only add to the reasons why one should cast a line in the Lansing area. Willis Bennett, director of Ingham County Parks, endorses taking up fishing as an outdoor activity in order to “enjoy the natural surroundings in a relaxed atmosphere.”
