A local business allows customers of all ages to express their creativity and build a masterpiece — except the work of art may consist of crushed Reese’s Pieces, fresh raspberries and hot fudge. Or it could be a combination of broken Oreo chunks and a drizzled caramel, marshmallow topping.

Anthropology graduate student Fredy Rodriguez-Mejia was one of the poets to read a poem at the Festival of Listening put on by the RCAH Center for Poetry on Friday. All of the poetry was recited in a language other than English and no translations were provided so that the audience would focus on the way that the words sounded instead of the meaning. Rodriguez-Mejia has been writing poetry for about 10 years and only recently started writing in English. Although most of the poems read were famous poems, Rodriguez-Mejia chose to read a poem he wrote about his hometown of Copan, Honduras, which he wrote after returning home for the first time in four years.

The band arrived in Dallas late and was pleasantly surprised by the luxury of their accommodations. The house we were staying in was located in the suburbs of Dallas and had all the amenities a touring band could ask for. Besides a small and perhaps a bit scuzzy swimming pool, the house also featured a miniature basketball court and a giant bean bag chair (quite a contrast). The attic of the home also had a makeshift pellet gun range — perhaps it was best that we did not discover this until the last day of our stay.

Driving to Oklahoma was more exciting than one would think. This was supposed to be our first show and the musicians were excited to perform, and I was excited to carry heavy stuff and rep the Murder Mitten.

As an American, I implore my fellow citizens to stop what they are doing. Stop cooking. Stop working. Stop driving. Just stop. Stop and count out 15 seconds and feel how long those brief moments in time truly are.

Valencia, Spain – Midterms finally ended Thursday and I don’t think I’ve been more drained from an exam week. Maybe it’s the steep decline in caffeine. I have a cup of coffee each morning and the occasional café con leche in the afternoon, but that’s nowhere near the daily four-cup pot I became accustomed to last semester.

The Michigan Princess has become the equivalent of the old-time bar in the Wild West to John Chamberlain. It’s the town hall, the bar, the restaurant and the wedding chapel — a place people like to gather. But the difference between the old-time bar and the Michigan Princess is that although the Wild West evokes images of deserts, horses and surly men in cowboy hats, the Michigan Princess, a paddle wheel steamboat, chugs along the shoreline of Lansing’s Grand River.

Valencia, Spain — I’m no expert on Spanish nightlife, or American nightlife for that matter, but I’m pretty sure a mall is a strange place for a club. Though in Granada, the mall is home to the city’s most popular discoteca.
