Flood warning issued for E.L. area

February 11, 2009

A minor flood warning has been issued for East Lansing and surrounding areas by the National Weather Service.

A combination of melting snow and heavy rain led to rising water levels overnight, said Nathan Jeruzal, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids.

The warning lasts through the weekend, although temperatures are predicted to return more typical February levels later this week, Jeruzal said.

Temperatures reached a record high of almost 60 degrees Tuesday in East Lansing. The unseasonably high temperatures aren’t expected to last long, with forecasts calling for an average of 27 degrees on Sunday.

The Red Cedar is currently a foot below flood stage, but is expected to rise to a foot above by Saturday, Jeruzal said.
