Growing up in Lake Orion, Kylie Werschler dressed in her mom’s clothes. Her favorite shows were Sailor Moon and Rainbow Bright. At preschool, she watched the girls in pigtails and dresses flounce by with a pang of jealousy. She wanted to look like them, dress like them, be one of them.

Maybe it is my roommate, who obsessively talks about the need to go on a diet and eat “healthier.” Maybe it is my mother, who, despite the fact that she has run 10 marathons in her life and runs every day out of the week, has to “get her body ready for swimsuit season.” Maybe it is the guy who I recently was seeing, who believed that he would be much better looking if he had six pack abs. Maybe these are the people in my life who have made me reflect on my own body and how I perceive myself.

The 46th session of Student Assembly, and ASMSU as a whole, have had very productive and successful summer and fall semesters. It is important that the student body is informed of what students have collectively accomplished and what students will continue to work toward during spring semester. The assembly has been busier than in recent years, much as a result of having set collectively established goals and priorities from the beginning, and the new environment of cooperation and communication that has been created between representatives and staff. Below is an update on key student initiatives and where each will be going next semester.

Two weeks ago, Jeff Caesar had a seizure while watching TV. During the seizure, Caesar dislocated his shoulder and broke his humerus — a bone in the arm. Caesar, a 40-year-old Lansing resident, has insurance under the Ingham County Health Plan for low income and uninsured residents; however, the plan includes a co-pay for most claims. Caesar also deals with anxiety and depression, and his health conditions make it hard for him to keep a job to even cover co-pays, he said.

Kresge Art Museum will display the NAMES Project AIDS Quilt at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Main Gallery. The quilt is an ongoing community arts project featuring more than 40,000 panels, many of which memorialize the life of a person lost to AIDS. An AIDS panel from the Kresge’s cultural collections also will be on display in the museum entryway. For more information, visit artmuseum.msu.edu.

Students will be encouraged to dream a little in the upcoming months as university officials consider their visions of what makes a perfect MSU home. Administrators are working on a plan they call the neighborhood concept — something that will distinguish separate neighborhoods and provide a new living experience for students who live on campus.
