With just four senior skaters on the MSU hockey roster (7-10-1, 1-2-1-1 Big Ten), head coach Tom Anastos needs all the leadership and production he can get out of them. It’s been hard to get that at times, with senior forwards Brent Darnell, Matt Berry and Tanner Sorenson all making their way in-and-out of the lineup throughout the season.

MSU hockey (7-10-1, 1-2-1-1 Big Ten) has been playing some of their best hockey of the season as of late, going 3-1-1 since they dropped a 5-0 contest to Minnesota on Dec. 5th. It was after that loss that head coach Tom Anastos decided to sit then-leading goal-scorer and senior forward Matt Berry.

Solely looking at its record, MSU hockey (7-10-1, 1-2-1-1 Big Ten) had a promising stretch of games over the holiday break. In four games played, the Spartans came back to campus boasting a 3-1 record over that stretch.

MSU hockey (7-9-1, 1-2-1-1 Big Ten) got its second half of the season off to a good start Sunday night. In the semifinals of the 50th anniversary of the Great Lakes Invitational, MSU took care of Ferris State at Joe Louis Arena skating to a 2-0 victory.

Less than 24 hours after suffering a 5-0 loss to the No. 3/6 Minnesota Gophers (9-4-1, 1-0-1-0 Big Ten), MSU hockey (5-9-1, 1-2-1-1 Big Ten) was back to redeem themselves. After playing to a 3-3 tie through overtime, the Spartans earned the extra point by winning the shootout 2-1.

MSU hockey (5-9, 1-2 Big Ten) lost its first of a two-game home series against No. 3/6 Minnesota on Friday night by a 5-0 score. After two power play goals and another shorthanded goal by the Gophers in the first period, MSU couldn't muster any sort of a comeback.

After splitting all five of their two-game series this season, MSU hockey (5-8, 1-1 Big Ten) will look to string together two wins this weekend. With preseason Big Ten favorite No. 3/6 Minnesota (8-4, 0-0 Big Ten) coming to town, the Spartans will face a daunting task. Still, MSU has found some success against the Gophers recently.

Not since the 2010-2011 season has an MSU hockey (5-8, 1-1 Big Ten) player scored more than 15 goals in an entire season. If a few current Spartans can keep up the pace they’ve set this season, MSU could have two players with more than 18 goals.

While some of America was shopping on Black Friday and getting rid of Thanksgiving leftovers, MSU hockey (5-8, 1-1 Big Ten) was facing off against Princeton University (2-7-1) in New Jersey. On Friday night, the Spartans were defeated 3-1 after allowing three unanswered goals. MSU rebounded Saturday and was able to defeat the Tigers 3-2.

The hockey team (4-7-0 overall, 1-1-0-0 Big Ten) was defeated 3-0 Friday night by the Ohio State Buckeyes (4-7-1 overall, 1-1-0-0 Big Ten). After defeating the Buckeyes 2-1 the previous night, the
Spartans couldn’t muster up any goals on Friday.

MSU hockey (3-6 overall) is still fighting to turn the corner as a program. When head coach Tom Anastos said before the season that the Spartans can see the corner, it was difficult to tell what he meant by that. Now, nine games into the season, his message is becoming more and more clear.

Following MSU hockey’s annual Green and White game on Sunday, the Spartans took to the ice again Tuesday night to face off against the Windsor Lancers in an exhibition match. With the regular season starting next week against Massachusetts, head coach Tom Anastos was looking to see where his team stands. After MSU looked impressive in the first two periods to take a 2-1 lead, the Lancers came back to tie it and win in a shootout.
