MSU hockey's 4-1 win over Ferris State "best game of the season," according to Anastos

November 1, 2014

The hockey team (2-4-0 overall) defeated the Ferris State Bulldogs (3-3-0 overall, 0-2-0 WCHA) 4-1 Saturday night in East Lansing.

"(I) thought that was probably our best game of the season," head coach Tom Anastos said. "I thought our guy.

MSU looked very in control in the first half of the period, putting plenty of pressure on Ferris State senior goalie CJ Motte. The Spartans went on a power play at the 10:07 mark of the period after a hooking penalty by Bulldog junior right defender Simon Dennis. MSU was unable to produce on the power play before ultimately committing a penalty of their own with an interference by sophomore right defender Rhett Holland.

Neither team could produce on the power play, but that didn't stop the Spartans from taking the first period lead. MSU broke through at the 16:50 mark on a goal by junior left defender Travis Walsh assisted by sophomore right wing Villiam Haag and sophomore left wing JT Stenglein, making it 1-0.

MSU, feeling confident, struck again just over a minute later on a goal by sophomore left wing Mackenzie MacEachern, making it 2-0 at the 18:08 mark of the first period.

The Spartans rode their late first period momentum into the second period, taking a 3-0 lead at the 5:50 mark on a goal by Haag assisted Stenglein and Ebbing.

It wasn't until the third period that the Bulldogs got themselves on the board with a goal of their own. At the 4:17 mark, Ferris State senior left wing Justin Buzzeo scored on an assist by sophomore right wing Gerald Mayhew and freshman center Andrew Dorantes, making it 3-1.

MSU answered back later in the third period making it 4-1, and the goal put the team's lead right back to three at the 13:20 mark on a goal by senior left wing Matt Berry on an assist by freshman right defender Josh Jacobs and MacEachern.

"That was our best 60 minutes we put together all year," junior center Michael Ferrantino said "The guys came with their A-game tonight everyone battled hard, worked hard, (and)) everyone did what was asked of them for us to win."

After only scoring one goal in the team's last three games, MSU got back on the right track defeating the Bulldogs 4-1. MSU next plays on Nov. 7 against New Hampshire (2-4-0 overall, 0-2-0 ECAC)
