Michigan State University women’s tennis experienced its share of highs and lows this season but ultimately finished with its best overall record since 2019-20, going 13-11.
Three Spartans were recognized with Big Ten postseason awards, as announced by the conference on Tuesday.
Senior Liisa Vehviläinen earned Second Team All-Big Ten honors, freshman Amara Brahmbhatt was named to the All-Freshman Team, and junior Matilde Morais received the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
These are the first All-Big Ten honors for the program since 2021, when current MSU assistant coach Mary Lewis was a two-time First Team honoree.
Vehviläinen is the first Spartan to earn Second Team All-Big Ten recognition since 1989. Brahmbhatt is the first MSU player ever named to the All-Freshman Team.
“She’s fierce, she's relentless, she's resilient,” MSU women's tennis head coach Kim Bruno said after MSU’s win against Oregon on its senior night. “No one's gonna outwork her, you know, and that's who she is as a person, too. So she's brought that into our program.”
Vehviläinen concludes her final season at MSU with her first career Big Ten postseason honor and second overall Big Ten recognition, after being named a Preseason Player to Watch at the start of the year.
Freshman Amara Brahmbhatt earned All-Freshman Team honors after notching nine singles wins this season while competing at both the No. 2 and No. 3 spots in the lineup.
Junior Matilde Morais was awarded the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, which honors student athletes who demonstrate sportsmanship, integrity, academic excellence and community involvement.
