The Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum will host a special Family Day event on Aug. 6 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The museum typically hosts Family Days on the first Saturday of every month.

"We call it Family Day because we are encouraging intergenerational experiences," Museum Director of Education Michelle Word said. "But we also know that family means coming with friends – it means all kinds of things."

Each Family Day the museum has a different theme, which correlates to the artwork being showcased in the gallery. The theme for Aug. 6 includes nature, the color green and growth.

"We're thinking about all the different ways that artists are inspired by the natural world," Word said. "The color green is our feature for the day."

Visitors will be invited to participate in artistic activities and collaborations, such as making plantable sculptures, drawing a large mural and making green cyanotype photographs.

Among art showcased by the museum, there will be many nature-inspired landscapes and the exhibition called "History Told Slant" – the museum's effort to have a more inclusive view of art history.

Word said that many communities don't have extensive art education opportunities in schools due to a lack of funding, so it's important to make it accessible and free.

"I think it's really important to bring families and community together," Word said. "All of our programs are built around always having some collaborative moments ... We think it's really central to what should be part of any vibrant community, which is opportunities to express yourself and to learn from others."

All ages are welcome to attend Family Days. However, visitors must register in advance on the museum's website to secure their spot.
