Vice Chair of the McLaren Greater Lansing Foundation Rick Wendorf is campaigning for a Republican spot on the MSU Board of Trustees.

After overcoming health challenges during his first time running, he is continuing his campaign this year. He was inspired to run because of his disappointment with MSU leadership.

“I really, really liked Lou Anna Simon, I thought that what she did for the university was amazing,” Wendorf said. “I think that the Larry Nassar debacle … too many people allowed that to continue for far too long.”

Wendorf said in the past, MSU was a “very, very fine university,” but leadership needs to be reconsidered. He hopes to bring more transparency to the administration.

“I think that anyone that’s incumbent during this time, during Larry Nassar, I think that they have emotional blood on their hands forever,” Wendorf said. “We’ve got to figure out, 'How do we protect our students?' I think that there were a lot of red flags and people ignored it and moved ahead because of someone’s reputation.”

His campaign issues include lowering the cost of education and increasing safety measures on campus.

“I am just appalled at the lack of safety, how huge it is,” Wendorf said. “Our campuses are not safe and it matters not whether you’re male or female anymore.”

Wendorf was an elementary, middle and high school teacher. He also taught in college and stood on the board of McLaren Greater Lansing Foundation. His family has a background in business.

“I understand the profit and loss and I understand good work ethics and morality,” Wendorf said. “What’s more important to me is my name and my character … I really want to make things change.”
