Michigan State President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. has announced the university's search for the next MSU Police Department chief. The current chief went on medical leave Tuesday.

Stanley said Chief Kelly Roudebush, who has been with MSUPD since 1994, has openly shared she was diagnosed with breast cancer a year ago.

Before becoming the first woman to lead MSUPD, Roudebush held many roles such as officer, patrol shift commander, field training officer, K-9 handler, training and special events security coordinator, threat assessment team commander and deputy chief of the Field Services Bureau, according to the statement.

"She has been the police chief since January 2019, and I appreciate the work she has done over the past year since I arrived at Michigan State University," Stanley said in the release.

Stanley appointed MSUPD Assistant Chief Doug Monette as interim chief while the university conducts a national search for a permanent chief, according to the statement.

"This opportunity  is an honor and a privilege and I look forward to this role as we move forward," Monette said in an email. "As I work to prepare our department for its next leadership transition, my goal is to continue to expand our community policing efforts and strengthen relationships within our community. Our responsibility and accountability is to the people we serve. During my time in this role, I hope to build upon our efforts to make campus a place where all feel welcome and safe."

The statement explains Monette has also fulfilled many roles within the department, including but not limited to, media relations, internal affairs, recruiting and serving as a team member that established implicit bias training within the department.

"More information will be provided in the coming weeks on the search for the sixth MSU chief of police," Stanley said.
