5 places to cry at MSU

Karly Graham —

Hi, my name is Karly, and I cry a lot. I cry during trailers for movies about dogs, and I cry at concerts. I cry listening to music, and I cry while watching touching sports moments. I cry a lot.

Now, entering my fourth semester at Michigan State, I kind of have everything figured out. I know that Brody is the best dining hall, and sometimes I should treat myself and make the trip out there for some of its fine cuisine. I know the best Starbucks and have my favorite worker.

Being four semesters in means I've learned the ropes, and for me, one of the first things I discovered was some of my favorite crying spots. I'm usually not one for sharing, but I would be more than happy to impart my wisdom upon my readers.

Now, I don't hope any of you find yourself in the position in which you need this list. Crying kind of sucks sometimes. But if you do happen to need a few places to let out some tears, I highly recommend the ones listed here. Happy crying!

5. The Library

Students of all ages can find themselves having late nights spent at the library. Trying to wrap up essays, projects and anything else can be stressful, and with stress comes the feeling of being overwhelmed.

If you're having an especially stressful week because of a massive workload, I would encourage you to make your way over to the library and shed a few tears. It may feel weird at first, but you'll soon realize the students around you will relate.

Everyone has gotten stressed and felt overwhelmed, especially the people who make the library a regular hangout spot. They know what it's like. They won't judge you, because they've been you.

4. The bathroom at your place of work

Now this one can be hit or miss depending on where you work, but I have always found crying in work bathrooms to be an incredibly therapeutic experience.

When you just have a really hard day at work and need to let out a good cry, there's nothing like sitting hidden in a stall until the tears have dispelled themselves.

Bathrooms are also usually tiled, which makes the acoustics killer! Your sniffles and muffled sobs literally couldn't sound better anywhere else.

Once it's all out of your system? You can make sure you look presentable in the mirror and then give yourself a big ol' thumbs-up in the mirror to tell yourself you can get through the rest of the day. I'm not sure if that's just something I do, but it always makes me feel just a teensy bit better, so I highly recommend it.

Besides that? A freshly cried face is just a little bit puffy with a bit of a glow, which makes everyone look a minimum of 50% more beautiful, and I think that's reason enough to let yourself cry in the work bathroom every once in a while.

3. The 31 bus route

When I lived in McDonel my freshman year, I would make the conscious decision to get on the 31 at the first bus stop on Grand River and ride it all the way around to my dorm. I'm aware that that's not time effective at all, but sometimes it was nice to just sit and listen to music.

A few times on that route, I let out some big tears. Spring semester was a rough time for me last year, and just sitting on the 31 for a while was a really relaxing routine that allowed me to let out a few tears while listening to Jetty Bones.

There was definitely a bit of judgement that I felt, but when you need to cry, you need to cry. There's no use in holding them back!

2. An empty dorm

There is nothing as comforting as the floor of an empty dorm when you need a big cry. I'm not talking a few tears falling, I am talking about a big, pent-up cry. A cry so big you are convinced you'll never run out of tears.

You just need to cry a little and relax? Sit in the comfiest seat you have in the dorm, whether that's a futon or your desk chair, and scroll through various social medias until it's out of your system.

You want a middle ground? Like you know you need to shed some big tears, but not enough to put you out of commission for the night? Get in your bed, drown yourself in blankets, cry for a little while and take a nap.

Here, there is no judgement. No roommate you're avoiding distracting. Nothing keeping you from crying your realest tears. Nothing around to make fun of the way your face smushes when you ugly cry. Just you, alone, in the place you call home.

1. The rapids behind Spartan Stadium

Full transparency: this ranking might come from a place of bias.

When I first started at MSU, I had a really hard time. I didn't have many friends, and when my birthday rolled around early last year and I spent it alone, I didn't know what to do.

Before a club meeting, I marched past my end destination of Bessey Hall, and I took a seat right by the water.

I cried, and I cried, and I cried. I sat there on a chilly Thursday night and spent a good 30 minutes crying by the water until I marched right back into Bessey Hall and made my first friends at MSU.

The water is loud enough that it drowns out the sounds of you sniffling. It's loud enough that you can't hear distracting noises around it. The time you spend there feels like it's just you and the water, and sometimes that can bring you back to reality a bit.

If the weather is nice, it's the perfect crying spot on MSU's campus.
