Engler moves to terminate former Osteopathic Medicine Dean Strampel

February 9, 2018

MSU Interim President John Engler has moved to begin revoking the tenure of William Strampel, the former dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine who became embroiled in the ex-MSU and USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar scandal.

Engler submitted a request to the Office of the Provost Friday, according to a press release from MSU Communications and Brand Strategy. The request is the first step in terminating Strampel's employment at MSU, according to the release.

“William Strampel did not act with the level of professionalism we expect from individuals who hold senior leadership positions, particularly in a position that involves student and patient safety,” Engler said in the release. “Further, allegations have arisen that question whether his personal conduct over a long period of time met MSU’s standards. We are sending an unmistakable message today that we will remove employees who do not treat students, faculty, staff, or anyone else in our community in an appropriate manner.”

Strampel stepped down from his position for medical leave in December 2017 after having served as dean of the college since 2002.

He is accused of failing to report sexual abuse complaints regarding Nassar and is named as a defendant in five lawsuits, all alongside Nassar, MSU, MSU's Board of Trustees, USA Gymnastics and former MSU gymnastics coach Kathie Klages.

MSU will refuse to cover any of Strampel's legal fees related to Nassar, according to the release.

A faculty committee must find cause to revoke tenure from a faculty member, according to the release, but Engler is confident such cause will be found.

“I sincerely hope the courageous survivors of Larry Nassar will see this as an unmistakable indication that things are changing quickly at Michigan State,” Engler said in the release. “I said last week that their efforts would not be in vain. This is just the first step in restoring trust in Michigan State.”

MSU announced Strampel's replacement on Jan. 22, Andrea Amalfitano. However, Amalfitano must first be approved by the MSU Board of Trustees at the Feb. 16 meeting.

The College of Osteopathic Medicine directed comment inquiries to MSU Communications and Brand Strategy.

When contacted for comment, MSU Communications and Brand Strategy sent links to press releases via email. The releases include the suspension of MSU radiology chairperson and the release about Engler's move to terminate Strampel.
